PROGRAM:
Today’s program was long distance swimmer Marcia Cleveland. Marcia’s many achievements include several marathon swims. Her first was around Manhattan in 1991. She swam the English Channel in 1994, Key West, Bermuda, Catalina, Lake Tahoe, Tampa Bay and the North Channel. The North Channel water was 53 degrees.
In 1999 she published Dover Solo, a bible for swimming the English Channel. Capt. Matt Webb was the first to swim the Channel. To certify the swim you cannot touch the boat or people. She has suffered hardships during her swims. She had hypothermia in the North Channel. She was stung by jelly fish in a swim at Santa Barbara. She got through it by envisioning her success. Marcia is one of 200 people who have completed swimming’s Triple Crown: English Channel, Manhattan and Catalina and she is the fastest.
She lives by several motivational thoughts. Define your goal, keep it honest and trust your gut. Plan to succeed. Hardest part is commitment, you fail over and over. “To kick your butt you have to pick up your foot!” Pay it forward. Exhibit grace and gratitude. Always dream big and aim high. Train, train, train.
