BULLETIN – June 10, 2026

President elect Bill Taranowski opened the meeting and called on Doug Fendon to give the Pledge. Greeter Bob Zamor led us in prayer, and in honor of Flag Day, Dennis Kratohwil helped us sing a shortened version of the National Anthem.

 

-Doug Fendon just returned from Arizona having attended his grandson’s 3^rd birthday.

-Carol August bragged about Marty Neal attending the National One Hand Golfer Tournament.

-Howard Jaffe just returned from a New Jersey road trip where he attended his grandson Nate’s high school graduation. Nate will be attending Tufts University in fall. 

 

-Our Club is marching in the Libertyville Days Parade on Saturday June 20^th. We will be the first group off leading the Parade. This will be a great opportunity to showcase the Club to the community. We have 16 members committed and would like to double that number. We will have a juggler on stilts and will hand out flags and candy. The Parade is expected to attract 5,000 people and will have a big impact on the community. Be at the Metra station by 9:45 am with a kickoff at 10. Please wear red, white, and blue and bring family and friends. Please advise Rich Schoeneman if you can attend.

-The Installation Dinner is scheduled for July 22^nd at Tom Zengler’s house starting at 6 pm.

-We will have a tent at Mainstreet’s Lunch in the Park on June 12^th and June 26^th. Volunteers are needed.

-Doug Fendon has a Caleb Williams Bears jersey unsigned. Please contact Doug if you have any connection to get it signed. It will be a great addition to our fundraiser early next year.

-Rick Mittelman, channeling his best Tucker Olson, advised that it is” not too late” to donate to the Rotary Foundation. First time Paul Harris donors can get a $750 match from the Club with a $250 donation.

-We have tickets for the CPHA (Community Partners for Affordable Housing) fundraiser on June 25^th at 21-mile Distillers in Highwood.

-Bob Zamor has updated the duty roster for the next quarter.

-Greeter and Prayer volunteers are needed for next week and July 1^st.

 

-Elliot Pinsel conducted a 70’s rock trivia quiz.

 

Today’s program featured Dave Archer, Executive Director of the Cook Memorial Library. Dave is a Past President of the Mundelein/Vernon Hills Rotary Club and has served as Executive Director of the Library for 11 years. The library is an independent taxing body that serves 61,000 residents. They have a 7-member board and have 500,000 visits annually. They are the largest library in Lake County. The library is housed in the Ansel B Cook home which was deeded to Libertyville in 1920 after Mr. Cook’s death. A new building was added to the property in 1968 and expanded in 2016, adding a children’s wing.

The library’s mission is engaging kids and schools. They want each child to read books before kindergarten. They conduct story time and provide services to students and teachers. They also promote lifelong learning. They have 366,000 titles and have an additional 2 million books available from their partner libraries. They have ESL programs and digital studios for students. They provide Roku sticks to access streaming services, and they have a library of things. The library is a community space where people can connect with fellow citizens. David uses the Four Way Test at work. 

The library must pay a higher price for books and eBooks because they are leant to many people. Each eBook can only be leant out a certain number of times.  They pay 5 times more than an individual. They serve 100 book clubs. They have books on a wide variety of perspectives and interests. The library only has so much space. If a book doesn’t get checked out it is removed in a book sale. They also offer technical assistance.
