BULLETIN – May 15, 2024

President Bablak opened the meeting, Doug Fendon gave the Pledge, Jeff Harger led us in prayer, and returning Dennis Kratohwil helped us through “Here comes the sun”.

 

-Howard Jaffe had heart tests and needed a stent. He is doing well. He attended SNL and sat in the audience on the main floor.

-Tom Gore recently visited New York and did the 5-borough bike ride. 46 miles! 

 

-Seb Karasu has been a Rotarian for 20 years.

-Our recent shooting event was attended by 11 Rotarians. Thanks to Larry Neal for organizing.

-Our next service project is May 30^th. It is a gardening project for the Round Lake Food Pantry.

-Our next meeting is at Mickey Finn’s at 6 pm.

-Patricia Bleck’s father-in-law passed away.

-The Installation Dinner will be held on June 26^th at Tom Zengeler’s home. 

 

Scott Hezner showed a video on the architectural work of Charles and Ray Eames.

 

Today’s program was Liz Fales from the Art Impact Project. The AIP is at the 10-year mark. Vicky has retired and Liz took over as Director. They serve a diverse population from 5^th grade and up, providing social and emotional learning. The program is not art therapy. They are in Lake Bluff and serve all of Lake County. “We don’t have addiction figured out.” They also serve seniors and vets. Their program has 5 facets. 1. Self-expression, 2. Hope healing, 3. Create a common connection, 4. Bolster empathy skills, 5. Support positive mental health and overall wellness.

They are making an impact through art. They have served 1500 adolescents and 200 adults. They create an ongoing relationship. Feedback is important for kids struggling with verbal communication. NICASA is a key partner. We need to identify what they need to process.

There has been a big jump in the people served. They now have 2 full-time staff. They have a knitting program called yarn storming. The Libertyville Ladies Club creates space for knitting. They need volunteers to help. You don’t need to be an artist. They are in a moment of transition and growth. Their annual Benefit is September 26^th. They are still doing their mask painting project. Their budget is $225k per year. They partner with Lake Forest High School in a suicide prevention project. “What things do I keep to Myself?”
