BULLETIN – April 23, 2025

President Jon Robb opened the meeting, Tucker Olson led us in the Pledge, and yours truly was not prepared to give a prayer so Jon Robb gave one for me. I had forgotten that I had prayer this week. Senior moment!

 

-John McDonald reported that Highway Cleanup was a big success.

-Next week is the fifth week of the month so we will have an evening gathering at the new Nirvana in Vernon Hills. Details to follow.

-Rich Schoeneman gave us an International Service update. The Board voted to fund two Global Grants with $2000 in District Designated Funds for each project.

     1.) The first project will create a revenue generating Cooperative run by stakeholders of village women and girls and train and empower them to operate and manage a log term, sustainable and profitable business in Tomoulilt, Morocco. This project will purchase sewing machines and an embroidery machine that will be used in a school/training facility run by volunteers.

     2.) The second project will purchase 3 pieces of medical equipment for therapeutic hypothermia in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the Los Angeles Hospital in Pasto, Columbia. This equipment will help about 30 newborn children annually to assist in preventing blindness and/or deafness due to birth conditions.

International funding during this Rotary year totaled $13,500 in addition to a $5000 donation to Shelter Box, which is currently working in Myanmar, in southeast Asia after a devastating earthquake occurred there.

-We have an upcoming service project at the Waukegan Sports Park on May 28^th. There will be no morning meeting. The project will be from 4 to 7:30 pm.

 

-Marco Amedei’s daughter will attend Houston Christian next year to play soccer. 

-Bill Taranowski bragged about the 7 scholarships awarded to LHS students.

 

-Ava Palmeri from LHS gave us a trivia quiz on Libertyville history.

 

Today’s program was members of the Interact Club at LHS. Several have attended the RYLA Conference. Interact at LHS is involved in several service projects which include: a PADS donation drive, a bake sale, a dinner for seniors, and work for Bernie’s Book Bank. The Club helped at our Second City Fundraiser and did volunteer work with Power of the Purse.

We also heard from our vocational scholarship recipients. Shana will attend Iowa State and pursue a degree in Business Analysis. Sharia will attend CLC and study medical imaging. DaVonte will pursue a career in Industrial Tech at CLC.

The RYLA attendees spoke to us about their experiences at the Conference. They heard speakers on leadership, made friends and learned to just “be me”. The Interact advisor, Jennifer, thanked the Club for its generosity.
