Former President Doug Fendon standing in for 3 Presidents asked yours truly to recite the Pledge. Robin O’Connor led us in prayer and Dennis Kratohwil helped us through the song “All you need is love”. Tom gore was formally introduced as our new Sergeant at Arms.

 

-Tom Gore described his National Lampoon vacation to Hilton Head. They rented 9 condos for 10 parents, 10 grandparents, and 13 kids under age 12! He also suggested that we might support the Rotary Club of Highland Park after the recent tragedy. He also credited Ron Lapins with being his mentor and promised not to wheel him.

 

-Robin O’Connor bragged about our recent participation at the voting transfer sites. It was a win win for the county and our club.

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

-Joe Connelly from the Barrington Breakfast Club announced their 50/50 raffle fundraiser. 400 ticket max.

 

-The hat was passed for the food pantry. $391 was collected.

 

-Rotary Anniversaries: Rich Babjak 26 years, Tom Miller 32 years, Tucker Olson 27 years, Steve Risley 26 years.

 

-Elliott Pinsel will conduct his first meeting as President next week.

-Bradford Freeman from “Band of brothers” and Woody Williams, the oldest remaining Medal of Honor recipient from World War 2 have passed away.

Today’s program was Ali O’Brien, Vice President of Community and Workforce Partnerships, talking about the new Advanced Technology Center at College of Lake County. CLC is committed to community engagement. Workforce and economic development go hand in hand. Their strategic plan includes access and success for students, equity and inclusion, teaching and learning excellence, and a collaborative culture. Their vision is to be a leader in providing innovative education and workforce solutions. Their goal is to meet 40% of workforce needs in key industry sectors.

 

There are 700,000 residents in Lake County. CLC has 35,000 students with 15,000 full time. They have 400 K–12 students in a summer program. Their goal is to provide an affordable, accessible start to higher education. 75% transfer to a 4-year college and 25% earn credentials. They have agreements with hundreds of colleges that guarantees transfer credit. 10 to 15 students transfer every year to the U of I Engineering program. There is also a University Center on campus housing 12 university locations including DePaul where students can transfer. 2000 high school students are enrolled in a dual credit program.

 

Students can earn high school credits as well as college credit at the same time resulting in $1.5 million in savings for students and families.

 

The Advanced Technologies Center is under construction at the old Lowe’s location in Gurnee. The Center is a 180,000 sq ft facility that opens in August and will provide work-based learning for industry, not just trades. Phase 1 will provide industrial tech training in a variety of disciplines to potential workers at local manufacturers. Lake County is the 2^nd largest manufacturing county in the state. Apprenticeships provide a pipeline of employees to local companies. The Lake Shore Campus in Waukegan is being remodeled. Enrollments are growing and the facility will include an urban farm that will provide food for the local community. Abbvie and Baxter provide internships. CLC has 8 career counselors imbedded in local high schools.
