President Greg Hill opened the meeting with a pledge and a prayer but without a song.

 

GUESTS:  This week John Blair invited his brother Bate to join us for breakfast, and Ron Bernardi the visiting Rotarian from Northbrook, who is serving as auctioneer at our fundraiser, also dropped in for a bite to eat.

 

BRAGS:

Everyone was feeling modest this week and decided to refrain from bragging.

 

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Our winter fundraiser silent auction and banquet was held on Friday on March 13, and the auction bidding list went live on Wednesday afternoon.

 

Ron Lapin announced that our Monday evening golf outings will begin on April 20 at Countryside.

 

Our charitable giving dinner will be on May 20.

 

Our installation dinner will be on June 24.

 

Richard Babjak was in charge this week, but there was no fun.  Instead he merely fined people based on the contributions they have made so far to the fundraiser.

 

Our own Scott Hezner spoke at this week’s meeting on the vocational avenue of service.  The survey our club took last year indicated that our members wanted to learn more about our avenues of service.

 

Rotary District 6440 gives away vocational scholarships, which Libertyville Sunrise Rotary submits applicants for.  Our club also sponsors some vocational scholarships on our own, and we have two student grants that we have established named after former members.  Our recommendations are based on student interviews, which are mostly conducted by Scott Hezner and Steve Risley.

 

Jeff Harger also uses his connection with the electricians brotherhood to have some input on this process.  One of the projects our club has sponsored in this area is to supply tool bags with Rotary embroidered onto the bag to trainees in the electrician union.

 

Traditionally vocational scholarships have heavily involved learning a construction trade, but they are now leaning more toward supporting careers in technology.   Scott is a big believer that we need to expand on the number of vocations we will cover, and he has pushed the district to move in this direction.

 

One of our recent candidates was a young woman who wanted to eventually open a tattoo parlor, and when our club members interviewed her, they were very impressed, by her focus on this goal and the amount of knowledge she had acquired on related subjects.  The district rejected her for a vocational scholarship, but our club then agreed to provide her one on our own, and she is now attending the College of Lake County.

 

Scott Adams attempted to win the progressive raffle of $848.00 with 22 cards remaining in the deck, but alas, alas, he only managed to pull the ten of clubs and the big pot rolls over once more.  Subsequently Elliott Pinsel won the weekly prize of $25.00, and he decided to reinvest his winnings by purchasing tickets for our fundraiser raffle.  Or he had left early and someone decided on his behalf to reinvest his winnings.  I was not quite clear on that point.
