President Elect Jon Robb had his debut, as the presider at a Libertyville Sunrise Rotary meeting, and he fit the role so well that everyone is looking forward to when he will regularly wield the gavel next  year.  We also had a rousing song to lead off our gathering with Dennis Kratohwil leading us in chanting “Off we go into the wild blue yonder.”

 

 

Steve Risley just returned from a three week tour of Europe which included visits to England, France and Ireland.

 

Tom Miller spent the last week on a fishing trip, where he spent twelve hours each day in a boat, chasing the little gilled creatures across the lake.

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

On August 30 it will be a fifth Wednesday, and in lieu of a morning meeting, we will have an evening gathering at the Joyful Gourmet.

 

On Saturday September 9 our club will be performing a service project for affordable housing.

 

Scott Hezner led us through a very educational presentation on architecture.  He began by stating that all buildings could be classified as either ducks or decorated sheds. A duck is a structure that you can tell what it is by looking at it, while a decorated shed is a more generic building, which one needs a sign to identify.  He then presented a slide show, illustrating the difference, and I think by the end we all learned how to recognize a duck when we see one.

 

Once again we hosted representatives from a number of charities, which our club contributes to, at our weekly breakfast, and the following organizations received checks to support the fine work they do for our community:

 

Samaracare- provides affordable behavioral outpatient care

 

Special Gifts Theater  - is a musical theater for the disabled.  Next year they will be presenting the Lion King.

 

Habitat for Humanity  - builds housing for the disadvantaged

 

Bravehearts Therapeutic – provides horse related activities for disabled children and veterans.

 

Sue’s Pantry – Sue runs a food pantry which provides food for 250 families a week, including many needy refugees.

 

Give in Kind  - gathers and distributes materials that can be used by other nonprofits.

 

GLASA – adapts sports to provide activities for the disabled to participate.

 

Lake County Center for Independent Living – helps the disabled live a full life

 

Gigi’s Playhouse – is a facility offering activities for individuals with Down Syndrome.

 

Willow House – is a center for grief counseling.

 

Honor Flight Chicago  - sends veterans on trips to Washington D.C.

 

Youth Conservation Corps – mentors youths in environmental preservation.

 

Seb Karasu had her ticket drawn first, and since the zoom contact had been lost with her, someone decided that she wanted to go for the big prize of $382.00 with forty-one cards left.  Unfortunately she only drew the seven of hearts, forcing her to depart without the prize in hand.  Kim Smith then won the weekly prize of $26.00.
