President Babjak opened the meeting and Greeter Jon Robb did double duty leading us in the Pledge and Prayer. No song this week.

 

BRAGS:
-Bill Taranowski took his daughter to Spain.
-Elliot Pinsel just wrote his last tuition check for his second son.
-Bob Zengler just returned from a ski trip with all four kids to Wyoming.

 

DATES: 
-John Blair’s birthday is January 14. Polly Grover celebrates 5 years as a Rotarian.

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
-With the retirement of Pat Hart, we need more Bulletin editors. Please volunteer. The more editors we have the less often you would need to write. Total immunity from the wheel!
-January 31 is the fifth Wednesday of the month. We will meet at Mickey Finn’s at 6 pm. Bring guests.
-Our next community service project is February 22 from 6 to 8 pm at Keeping Families Covered. We will be packing boxes for the needy. We need 4 more volunteers. Contact Patricia Bleck if interested.
-Fundraiser update: City of Hope is our premier sponsor. We will be doing a new sign so we can still use more sponsors. Jim Curtis has been doing some heavy lifting getting sponsors. Tom Miller has the website up. The new system, One Cause, has requires some learning. The website will have info, a slide show, and ticket sales. We have 11 restaurants signed up for early dining. Silent auction items total 25. We could use 100. Kim Smith is collecting items at the Centre Club. We are starting to promote the event now. Posters will be available next week. We have sold 85 tickets so far. Capacity is 676. We sold out last year. Raffle tickets are available.

FUN & FROLICS:
Jon Robb entertained us with a quiz about college football trivia. Yale has the most National Championships!

 

PROGRAM:
Today’s program was presented by Louise Keats from Bravo Waukegan. Bravo was started in 2008 by Pat Zakorawski when Waukegan Schools decided to end their music programs. Pat was a Ravinia Board member and called Waukegan to see what they needed. The schools needed instruments for their underprivileged students. Pat’s philosophy is:” Waukegan kids should have the same advantages as her kids.” She is still an active board member.
Waukegan schools receive a 68% grade from a rating agency. That score is adequate. 68% of their students are low income. They have no money in their budget for programs or instruments. Bravo provides the money. They have funded an after-school mariachi club and provided cultural training for teachers. Bravo started a music summer camp called “Bravo Buddies Summer Camp”. Parents pay 10% of the cost for the 4-week camp. Students get 1 on 1 training and go on field trips. They also started a program called “Raise the Bar” where kids are paired with mentors on music. The program does performances. Upcoming is the Middle School Festival at the Genessee Theater in April. 
Bravo is a small non-profit with a $100k annual budget. Support can be in the form of following on social media, volunteering and donations. They also need board members.
