BULLETIN – July 12, 2023

Newly minted president Rich Babjak rang the bell to open his first meeting, Elliot Pinsel gave the pledge, Greeter Tim Klein led us in prayer, and song meister, Dennis Kratohwil, got us through his rendition of “Take me out to the ball game”. Rich unveiled the new banner for the Rotary year. “Create hope in the World”. Rotary focus will be on mental health.

BRAGS:
-Jim Curtis’s son wrangled an invitation for Jim to serve as an honorary observer at the John Deere Classic on Friday. He was able to follow a threesome inside the ropes. What an experience! Maybe his son will adopt me!

 

-Elliot bragged that Rich was able to get Tim Klein to attend a meeting! Something that Elliot couldn’t do!

 

-Rick Mittelman’s son played in a poker tournament in Vegas and cashed despite closing on a new house here at home. Wonder how that went over at home?

 

-Tim Klein bragged that he got an eagle at White Tail golf course.

 

-Bill Taranowski is doing an internship this summer and he just returned from a trip to Amsterdam with his son. Can you say red light district?

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
-Rich will reveal the results of the survey he did with 32 respondents. Next weeks meeting will be a planning session to establish action items.

 

-Rich has 6 tickets to the Misericordia funf raiser on 7/19. It will be from 6 to 9 pm at the Art Institute. Tickets are free. Email rich if you are interested.

 

-The new budget and charitable giving donations were approved at the recent Board meeting.

 

-Rotary Anniversaries: Brad Guttzler – 4 years, Steve Risley, Rich Babjak – 27 years, Tucker Olson – 28 years, Tom Miller – 33 years.

 

-Patricia Bleck announced a service project on 7/25 from 6 to 8 pm at St Joe’s church. Build a bed event to build beds for needy kids. Bring kids and grandkids. Also, “The value of Rotary email going out.

 

-Scott Hezner told us about an opportunity to talk to students at Fremont Middle school about careers in technical fields. This can open the eyes of young people to jobs in manufacturing and other domains. Scott needs volunteers to do a 2-class session on technical careers.

 

-Doug Fendon announced a new membership initiative. He is asking us to bring in our Rotarian magazines. He will put a notice about our Club on them and distribute them to reception areas in town.

 

FUN & FROLICS:
Tom Gore did a naming quiz on college logos.

 

PROGRAM:
Today’s program was Fran Skinner, a partner with AUM Partners, a boutique consulting firm that works with organizations to “develop leaders at every level” through customized talent assessment and leadership. Fran started working in her family’s grocery stores at 14 in several positions. After college, in addition to her day job at Allstate Investments, she became the family business accountant until her parents’ retirement in 2007. She is a CPA, CFA and has an MBA from U of I – Chicago. She has written about talent and leadership for Barron’s, the Wall Street Journal and coauthored a book entitled “High Performance Investment Teams.”

 

Fran joined AUM in 2009 as a consultant to help people reach their full potential. She presented a diagram with four quadrants. The upper right-hand quadrant represents excellence. These are people who are “in the zone” and perform with excellence. They are the highest level of engagement and productivity. The upper left-hand quadrant are people with high potential. They can move to excellent with more training. The bottom right are the competents. They have the proper training but do not derive satisfaction or pleasure from their work. The bottom left are the poor fit/incompetent. They derive no satisfaction from their work and there is no room for growth.

 

The two axes are eligibility and suitability. Eligibility can be taught. Suitability just is. Don’t let what you have done in the past hold you back. If you are using your highest and best use of your time at work, you are in you “A game.

 

FOOD PANTRY:
We collected $376 for the Food Pantry today.

 

RAFFLE:
-Daily: $26 won by Tom Zengler. He donated his winning to the Food Pantry.  
-Progressive: $254 (46 cards). Bill Rickert drew the 5 of hearts. ROLLOVER.
