PROGRAM:

Today’s program was Mike Marion, Development Director of Waukegan to College. WTC’s students are first generation, college bound students, 95% of which come from low income households. Virtual learning leaves low income students behind. The program was launched to engage students academically. WTC buys laptops and delivers food as well.

Mike started a virtual oratory contest. Judges are college professors who do hour long lectures. Topic was: “What social change should we do in the next 5 years”. Students learned how to persuade audiences and build credibility. For most it was their first introduction to public speaking. The students were taught that they need confidence to advocate for themselves. Speeches were judged and honorariums were awarded to the top 3. Students learned to become advocates. WTC has 170 students being tutored. 60 took part in the contest. 40 submitted videos.

WTC had 20 students who graduated from high school and went on to college last year. 40 have been accepted this year. WTC has secured a total of $6 million in financial aid. Every student in the program has gone on to college. Waukegan High School has 4700 students and is the 21st largest in the country. WTC is only serving a fraction of that population.
