PROGRAM:
Today’s program is Dr. Juli Jones from Hearing Associates, Inc. in Libertyville. Julie is a trained audiologist telling us about hearing loss. 14% of people having a hearing test have hearing loss. 1 in 2 over 75, 466 million globally and 60% of baby boomers suffer a hearing loss. Hearing is a $750 billion industry worldwide with $100 billion in the U.S. People with a hearing loss may lose $12,000 per year in income. Loss of hearing may come from diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking, and infections. Signs include misuse of TV and radio (too loud). Also, unable to hear in noisy places and ringing in the ear are signs of a problem. Medicare covers hearing tests.
Hearing loss interferes with daily living. Income loss, irritability, loneliness, memory loss are all symptoms of hearing loss. 1/3 of those affected have marital difficulties. Hearing loss can lead to dementia. 50 million globally have dementia and that number is expected to grow to 82 million in 10 years. 1 in 3 dementia cases can be prevented by treating hearing loss. The cost of dementia is expected to be $2 trillion in 10 years.
Hearing aids take the strain off the brain and helps keep it fit. There is a strain associated with decoding sound. The hearing impaired tend to practice social avoidance. There has been a big jump in technology in 2020. Smart phones can connect with hearing aids. Devices are available to assist in hearing TV. Hearing aids cost between $3,200 and $7,200 and last for 4 to 6 years. Hearing Associates, Inc. will conduct free screenings in their 3 offices.
