President Babjak opened the meeting with Bill Rickert giving the Pledge, Greeter Scott Hezner leading us in prayer and Dennis Kratohwil helping us through “Help”.

 

-Bob Zamor celebrated 50 years of wedded bliss on Friday and took his wife on a quilting road trip. They visited the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky.

 

-Rich Babjak’s daughter was married in England with their family attending.

 

-We will not have a morning meeting on the fifth Wednesday this month. Instead, we will have an evening meeting at the Joyful Gourmet in Libertyville. This would be a great opportunity to invite prospective new members.

 

-The District Leadership training program starts in September. You can sign up on the Rotary website.

 

-Tuesday night was the monthly Board meeting. Howard Jaffe will replace Steve Risley as Foundation Treasurer,

 

-Rotary anniversaries: John McDonald – 7 years, Tom Gore – 3 years.

 

Pat Hart conducted a native American quiz. Fun!

 

Today’s program was the second installment of check presentations to the charities we are supporting

.

-First up was the Libertyville Stars swim team. They are just now back to regular competitions. There will be a Special Olympics meet called “Reach for the Stars” at LHS later this year.

 

-The Art impact Project does therapeutic art with those with emotional issues. Students include kids, veterans, and inmates.

 

-The David Adler Music and Arts center promotes, preserves, and educates students in the arts. They also are charged with preserving the David Adler Center, a historic building.

 

-The Senior Council of Libertyville unites senior groups and partners with the Senior Center to conduct events for seniors. They do Honor Roll presentations for Libertyville residents who have made contributions to the community.

 

-The LHS Interact Club has Best Buddies and Top Cats programs that organize relationships with students with disabilities. They conduct a peer buddy program that mentors students with disabilities throughout the County.

 

-Reading Power does literacy tutoring for preschool to second grade kids in underachieving schools in Zion, North Chicago, Wheeling and Palatine. 38% of Illinois third graders can’t read a grade level. 95% of those incarcerated are illiterate.

 

-SEDOL, the Special Education District of Lake County, serves people below the poverty level. 40% of their participants are single parents. They provide sign language classes, a weekend backpack program which sends food home to needy families, and they conduct summer camps for kids.

 

-Libertyville American Legion Post. American Legion is the largest veteran’s organization in America with 1.6 million members at 12,000 posts. They helped develop the GI Bill, and the VA. They also conduct Boys and Girls State programs for young people. The local Post is the caretaker of the Post building that was built in 1894.

 

-Lake County Childrens Advocacy Center helps families with abused children. They are in their 56^th year and use multi-disciplinary teams to deal with family issues.

 

Tom Gore shed his kindler/gentler cloak and wheeled John McDonald and Rick Mittelman who left their raffle tickets on the table.
