Diana Taylor opened the meeting with a pledge and a prayer, and Dennis Kratohwil led us in singing Happy Birthday to Larry Neal, Doug Fendon and Tom Miller

GUESTS:

This week Kim Tuyn joined us for breakfast.

BRAGS:

Doug Fendon bragged that he will be leaving us to take a two week trip to Croatia

Tony Collins bragged that his wife has just completed an iron man competition in Madison and that he has just spent a week escaping civilization in the Boundary Waters.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

A wrap up meeting on the North Shore Wine Beer Cigar and Food Festival will be held on September 20 at 5:30 p.m. at Diana Taylor’s office.  Anyone interested in providing feedback on the festival is invited.

On Tuesday evening October 30 we will have a fifth Wednesday social meeting at the house of Rick Mittelman.  There will be no morning meeting that week.

Diana Taylor announced that the board had approved allowing Doug Bennett to speak to us on October 3.  She explained that this was somewhat controversial, because he is running for congress this fall, and she would like feedback on what exactly the rule should be on allowing politicians to speak to the club to gain support for their campaigns.

Jeff Harger mentioned that shelter box is going to the Philippines today to try to help people hit by the recent hurricane there.  He has information available, if you would like to donate to this effort.

Pat Hart informed us that October 6 will be the last highway cleanup this year for our club.  Volunteers will be needed to show up at 7:00 a.m. at Butterfield and 137 to make the world a more beautiful place.

Tim Dempsey announced that on October 20 our club will again be helping with the annual Pumpkin Fest, and he will be looking for volunteers.

FUN AND FROLICS:

By popular demand Pat Hart was in charge of fun and frolics for the second week in a row, and recognizing that Illinois is about to celebrate the bicentennial of its admission to the union, he provided an educational presentation on the state’s history.  Modesty precludes me from commenting on the quality of the presentation.

PROGRAM:

Our speaker this week was Sarah Pressly from Feed My Starving Children.

Feed My Starving Children is a Christian non-profit organization that ships meals to children in danger of starvation around the world.  The meals are packed by volunteers and cost about twenty-two cents each,  This means that for $80.00 one child can receive one meal a day for a year, which frequently makes the difference between whether the child survives or not.  Last year the organization packed 333,000,000 meals with the help of 1,200,000 volunteers.

The organization also runs FMSC Market Place, which attempts to establish self-sufficiency among the recipients of their charity in the hope that they can eventually free themselves from dependency on the program.

Feed My Starving Children has eight permanent facilities where volunteers pack meals, including one in Libertyville, where members of our club have gone on a number of occasions to contribute their time to the project.  The Libertyville Sunrise Rotary Club has also donated $23,500.00 over the years to the organization.

Last year Tom Miller, who is the member of our club, who first got us involved with the organization, hosted a mobile packing event for Feed My Starving Children at his business premises.  Tom is hosting another mobile packing event from November 30 to December 2, and I suspect he will be looking for volunteers from our ranks.

RAFFLE:

Seb Karasu attempted to draw the Ace of Spades out of thirty-three cards this week to win the progressive raffle pot of $593.00.  Yet her stars did not appear to be properly lined up today and she only picked the ten of clubs.  David Potts then won the weekly drawing of $30.00 and inspired by our program he donated his prize to Feed My Starving Children.

NEXT WEEK:

Greeter and Prayer:  Jim Hessenthaler

Fun and Frolics and Bingo:  Scott Hezner

Program: Gerald Pedrin USMC League
