-Today is District 6440’s Day to honor all Vets.

 

-There will be another Winter Fundraiser meeting in 2 weeks. Hopefully we can have an event in the Spring.

 

-Bingo is in progress. If it is your turn to do Bingo, let Pat Hart know if you are uncomfortable doing it.

 

Elliott Pinsel has 400 ornaments for his gift drive. He will pick up gifts by 12/4.

 

-It is not too late to send Steve Risley a check for $75 for Polio Plus. The District will match our $.

 

-Jeff Harger is waiting for a count of Thanksgiving meals.

 

-Since we are doing Zoom meetings, you will have the option to commit your meal cost to Food Banks or deduct the amount from your bill.

 

- !2/5 is bell ringing day for the Salvation Army. So far only one door at Jewel will be used and there will not be a mandatory shift for everyone. Let Diana Taylor know if you want to participate.

 

Today we inducted Tom Stanczyk as our newest member. Tom and his wife moved to Libertyville in 2018 from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He works for Zebra Technologies who provide hand held scanners for many applications. They have 2 daughters living in Texas and a son in Minneapolis. Please join me in welcoming Tom!

 

Rich Schoeneman filled in for Bill Tarnowski and entertained us with a quiz.

 

Today’s program was Sara Ruthberg from the Salvation Army. Sara grew up in the Salvation Army. Her parents were ministers and Sara has done 3 overseas service trips. She is currently in her second year as the Red Kettle Campaign Manager for the Chicago Region.

 

The Salvation Army was founded in 1865 by William Booth, a Methodist Minister, in England. He preached in the streets and bars and helped the poor to get back on their feet. He created a quasi- military structure hence the name Army.  The Salvation Army Chicago unit was formed in 1885. The group is now the largest provider of social services in Chicago.

 

The Salvation Army serves basic needs providing meals, clothing and rent assistance. One effort is Stop It! which is an anti-human trafficking group. They also provide housing services and recently created Shield of Hope which provides emergency homeless services for families in the Chicago area.  They are also involved in disaster services both here and overseas. Local services include food pantries, coats, back packs and school supplies.

 

Bell ringing is a service opportunity that began in San Francisco in 1891. Red Kettle raises about 70% of the operating funds for the year. Many ringers are paid but volunteers provide the best revenue. $20 will feed a family of 4 for a day. Ringers will have PPEs this year and donors can use their phones to contribute. There is also an online kettle; ring.com.
