President Hill opened the meeting, Jon Robb helped us with the Pledge, Greeter Patricia Bleck led us in prayer and returning Songmeister Dennis Kratohwil nursed us through “Take me out to the ballgame” in honor of the World Series.

 

Today saw a record number of brags.

 

-Rick Mittelman bragged about the Illinois football victory.

 

-Jim Hessenthaler has a new grandson Leo.

 

-Pat Schwartz told us about the Love Inc. fundraiser which raised $91,000!

 

-Bill Rickert’s firm completed a project bringing Lake Michigan water to Wauconda.

 

-Teri Dreher’s son was married on Saturday night and she is enjoying her new puppy Wilby. She also has formed a non-profit group to advocate for low income seniors.

 

-Elliott Pinsel bragged about his son “Bacon boy” who has grown up and plays on the LHS football team. “You wouldn’t recognize him!”

 

-Seb Karasu attend a book signing of former Club member Phil Kafka and she just launched a new food brand called Cherish which makes vegetable spreads and dips. The products are all natural.

 

-Bill Taranowski told us about some exchange students from France here in Libertyville.

 

-Next week is the fifth Wednesday of the month so there will be no morning meeting.

 

-The Winter Fundraiser will be held on March 13, 2020. A kickoff meeting will be held on 11/19 to begin the planning.

 

-Salvation Army bell ringing will take place this year on 12/7. All members must do a shift or find a sub.

 

-Scott Hezner said that the work project at the American Legion will now be 11/16 to do maintenance on their building. Hours are 9 to 1. Please sign up.

 

-This year’s Holiday Party will be held at Post Time on 12/4.

 

-Elliott Pinsel will have ornaments on 11/6 to pass out and gifts will be collected on 12/11.

 

Robin O’Connor entertained us with Halloween trivia.

 

Our speaker was Andrea Kovalczuk from Parana Brazil where she is President of her Rotary Club. She founded an organization called Brasil without Gaps. Her group noticed that impoverished Brazilians lived in wooden huts that have gaps in the walls. In Brazil milk is packaged in cartons. The cartons have 6 layers and are essentially waterproof and last for years in garbage dumps. They discovered that they could recycle the cartons, cleaning them and making them in a waterproof membrane to cover the gaps in the walls of houses. This wallpaper insulated the houses and reduced trash in landfills.

 

Volunteers collect the milk boxes left at collection points. The boxes are then cleaned, cut to lay flat and sewn into plates that are placed on the inside walls of houses. Those boxes that aren’t used are recycled. In addition to the plates, the group provides education about clean habits as well as food for the less fortunate. They hold “garage sales” with donated furniture and clothes to raise money for the organization. In 3 years they have insulated 200 houses.  “They not just filling in gaps in the houses, they are filling in the gaps in lives”.
