Donald Brewer - Governor of District 6440

Tucker Olson opened the meeting this week, and Dan Lutter led us in singing "Here Comes the Sun."

GUESTS:

Gary Holland a guest of John McDonald joined us for breakfast this week.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Steve Risley reminded us to try to get any donations you are making to the Rotary Foundation in before June 30.  This is the end of the Rotary year, and how much our club contributes will determine how eligible we are for matching grants.

Tom Miller gave us some updates on the Northshore Wine Beer Cigar and Food Festival which we will be holding in late August as our summer fund-raiser.  Raffle Tickets will hopefully be available for distribution at next week’s meeting.  Tickets to the event will be sold on line this year, and we will be using BidPal for sales of goods at the event.  Our website is up for the event which means people can purchase tickets at any time.

Tucker Olson announced that next Tuesday May 22 at 5:30 p.m. there will be an organizational meeting for the fund-raiser at Diana Taylor’s office

Larry Neal announced that Mother’s Trust golf outing will be held on Friday June 15 at Pine Meadows, and he hopes to see a lot of us there.  Contact Larry for details.

Teri Dreher is holding a meeting at 4:00 p.m. this Sunday at her house for anyone interested in the South African trip.  By committing soon you should be able to get the best ticket prices.

BRAGS:

Larry Neal bragged that his oldest daughter received a masters of library science from Urbana.

On Tuesday evening Scott Hezner attended Honors Night at Libertyville High School where our club awarded seven scholarships.

Bob Zamor tells us his son just returned from Ethiopia where he made a presentation to a health care conference on a complex software package which is useful in the industry.  Bob did not want to bore us with too many details on the software, but he will be happy to explain the technical fine points to whoever is interested at a private session.

Teri Dreher just published her second book on health care advocacy.

It turns out that Seb Karasu has a secret life that she has been hiding from us over the years.  In addition to being a famous food safety expert, she is also a champion race car driver, and she recently won a race in Joliet.

Dan Lutter performed in a concert presented by the First Presbyterian Church choir on Mother’s Day.

FINES AND FATIGUING EXERCISES:

Instead of Fun and Frolics this week we had a session of what is properly better labeled Fines and Fatiguing Exercises which required everyone to pay money for no logical reason.

PROGRAM:

Our program this week was presented by Denise Kitanovski a counselor at Samaritan Counseling Center.

Samaritan Counseling has eleven locations in Cook and Lake Counties, and at any one time they have approximately 400 people receiving their services.  The organization is attempting to make mental health counseling accessible to all.  Sixty-three percent of their clients have no insurance coverage for their services, and they use a sliding fee scale that charges clients based on their ability to pay.  They also offer some services, such as grief support groups, at no charge.

Samaritan is a faith based organization.  They perform their services out of church owned buildings, which charge them no rent and thus aid in their effort to bring the services to those who otherwise would not be able to afford them.  The organization offers faith based counseling, but they also offer counseling without the faith ingredient to those who feel uncomfortable with that approach.

RAFFLE:

This week we had $33.00 in our weekly raffle and $171.00 in our progressive pot with only 57 cards left.   Teri Dreher won the weekly drawing, and Steve Risley tried unsuccessfully for the big money, although he left the meeting before the raffle, so you cannot say he was really trying very hard.

NEXT WEEK:

Fun & Frolics and Bingo: Diana Taylor

Greeter and Prayer: David Potts

Program: John McDonald from Engineers without Borders
