PROGRAM:

Our speaker today was Don Cummings. His topic was personal safety. Don is an author who spent 10 years in law enforcement and 30 years as a "crime news" broadcaster. There was not much thought given to crime or safety in the suburbs until  the infamous " Brown's Chicken Massacre" in Palatine. Don stressed that we practice "mental awareness" which he defined as keeping your head up while others keep their's down. Stay in the "zone".

He gave us some drills for safety. When we learned to drive a car we learned defensive driving. Our "sonar" should always be pinging. Practice defensive living. Check out exits in public places. Use the "gunfighter mentality". Sit with your back to the wall. Think of yourself as a secret agent looking for a friend. Watch faces and hands. Be especiallly watchful in train stations and bus stations. It is as easy to pay attention when walking as when driving.

With regard to the new concealed carry law, Don doesn't think 16 hours of training is enough. Even trained professionals may not be able to react fast enough. "The fight most easily won is the one you don't get into!"
