Pearls of the Club

Our shared values define us more than our differences.  - Senator John McCain

Notes From the August 27th Meeting
President Ghida Neukirch opened the meeting welcoming everyone. She led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Four Way Test.

Ghida introduced and welcomed our speaker, Susan Tatelli and her parents, Karen and Paul.

Jill Brickman and Jane McCarthy from the Glenview Sunrise Club were also introduced. Jill and Jane shared news about their fundraising dinner on September 8th at Chicago Harley Davidson in Glenview. Dinner is $15 per person - all you can eat. If you can't be there, raffle tickets are $15 each.

Ghida thanked club members for helping at the pancake breakfast, especially Paul Munk who organized the event. There was a great turnout.

Ghida distributed cards that Magdalena Wrobel created for members to share with the community about our club.

Rotary at Rosewood is set for September 20th. The Interpretive Center at Rosewood Beach is where we'll gather. Join us from 5p - 7p for dinner and raffle. This year the cost is $20 per person. Please contact Mike Babian to reserve your spot.

Our next service project is a beach clean-up on September 29th in conjunction with the Interact Club. More to come on this event.

The HPHS Interact Club will hold their inauguration breakfast on Wednesday November 14, 2018 at 7:30 a.m in the high school cafeteria. All of our members are invited to attend for an opportunity to meet the Interact members and their families. Everyone is invited to bring donations to "Stuff a Bus" for Moraine Twp. Food Pantry.

The Day's Program
Our speaker was Susan Tatelli, a junior at HPHS. Susan spoke about Epinephrine (EpiPen) Readiness. She shared what to do in the event of an emergency anaphylactic allergic reaction - something that can happen at any time.

As a young child, Susan was on an airplane when she suffered from such a reaction. Although she hadn't eaten any, in some way, Susan had come in contact with peanuts, the cause of her reaction. Since then, Susan has focused on sharing with the community how to handle such an emergency. She showed the club the two YouTube videos she made, "How to Stay Alive" and "This is What I know". She developed these videos for her Girl Scout Silver and Girl Scout Gold Award projects. Girl Scout Gold is the highest achievement within the Girl Scouts of the USA, earned by Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts. Only 5.4% of eligible Girl scouts successfully earn the Gold Award. The videos show Susan experiencing her anaphylactic reactions to peanuts while she participated in a clinical trial and how she self-administered epinephrine. The club members also practiced administering an EpiPen.

Susan's journey and her quest to help educate and prepare others caught national attention. You can read a recent article about her work effort, plus a link to her videos here: http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/highland-park/news/ct-hpn-teen-educates-on-epi-pen-use-tl-0526-20160524-story.html
