The Day's Program
Our guest speaker today was Nicole Stocker. Nicole is an educator at the Lake County Discovery Museum. Nicole also handles interpretation, and programming at the Adlai E. Stevens Historic Home; Banner Heritage Farm; and Fort Sheridan. Her discussion focused on Fort Sheridan and it’s fascinating history. We were provided a power point with pictures showing the early settlement and how Ft. Sheridan came into existence in 1889. It was the only fort named after the general who was instrumental in its founding. Fort Sheridan was closed in 1993 and the north half is now 500 homes and condos; the SW quadrant is Army reserved and the SE portion is Navy housing. The fort was very important during World War I and World War II, as it was a place where many soldiers were trained, thus helping the general performance of the U.S.A. in the theaters of operations.

Many thanks to Mike Babian for his notes!
