The Day's Program
The Day's Speaker was Gail Hodges, the Development Director of Family Service of Lake County. Gail thanked Rotarians for their support of the Nuestro Center.  The money went to two areas:

First of which was counseling. They provide individual and group therapy to adults, families, youth and seniors, including bilingual counseling. For instance, there was SELF, a social emotional program for middle and high school students which helps them make good decisions in times of challenge. There was also case management to help families sustain financial stability. All of the organization's counselors hold master's degrees and all but two are licensed clinical social worker. Their goal is to reach a rate of 3.5 out of 4 in satisfaction with counseling experience and services. In 2015, they reached 3.8 our 4 rating from their clients.

Second was education: particularly two programs: 1) Homework Club at Oak Terrace which serves 41 students in grades 1-5, which has seen success in improved score, and 2) Nuestro Verano Summer Camp which served 60 students, providing them a summer program close to what other students receive with field trips, STEM experiments, meals every day and backpacks with food for the families on the weekend.

To give you some perspective of what Family Service faces in our community - 73 percent of the students at Oak Terrace are low income, typically a family of five making about $20K per year.

Many thanks to Karen Dennis for her notes and Diana Sotelo for her picture!

What Happened In 1927...
In celebrating our Club's birthday, let's take the opportunity to look at what was happening in the world at that time. So over the next few months, I'll share with you what I've been able to find out able the 1927.

Some Highland Park Rotary News Stories of the year 1927:
Paul Udell, a publisher, was the Chairman of the group that proposed our Club. (At the time, the Waukegan Rotary Club had taken a survey ans determined the population of Highland Park was 6,167 in 1923.) Mr. Udell tried twice to get a Club started  - once in 1923 and once in 1925. Why he failed, was unknown, but Solomon St. Peter was successful in 1927. The Wilmette Rotary Club was our sponsor and twenty-one men were proudly sworn in on December 27, 1927 as charter members of the Club:

President: Solomon St. Peter, Laundry
Vice President: Earl Gsell, Drug Retailing
Secretary: Percy Prior, Moving & Storage
Treasurer: Charles Grant, Banking
Sergeant-At-Arms: Paul Udell, Publisher
William Brown, Carpentry
Thomas Clark, Gas Service
Fred Cushing, Hotels
Joe Garnett, Department Store
Lyle Gourley, Lumber Retailing
Charles Harbaugh, Lumber Distribution
Harry Kelley, Funeral Directing
Edward Mikes Knox, Telephone Service
Walter Meierhoff, Hardware Retailing
Howard Moran, Plumbing
Dr. C Vigo Nichols, Dentistry
J. Richard Purnell, Truck Retailing
Dr. Donald Rossiter, Physician and Surgeon
Edward Schweitzer, Real Estate Agency
Dr. James Simon, Ear, Eye, Nose and Throat
