Notes From the July 15th Meeting
President Paul Munk welcomed attendees and guests. Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and the Four Way Test.

Nancy Webster shared information about the Pieces of the Past program, a HP150 initiative which consists of puzzle pieces that will be placed throughout the community. Each puzzle piece includes historical information.    She also referenced the book, “Pioneer to Community, The Story of Highland Park” by Marvyn Wittelle.  The book was paid for by the Rotary Club and copyright in 1958.  Approval to reproduce this book would require Rotary Club approval.

Jim Berardi reported that Golf Outing plans are underway. Individuals were invited to register to play or come out and network.  The outing will be held on Thursday, August 8, 2019.

Ghida Neukirch distributed a sign-up sheet for National Night Out on August 6, 2019. Volunteers are needed to work shifts from 5:30 PM to 7 PM and 7 PM to 8:30 PM.  National Night Out will be held in front of Highland Park’s City Hall. Volunteers are needed to mann the Rotary table and share information about Rotary with attendees. The Club is sponsoring a balloon artist and face painter.

Paul Munk reported that the Rotary International Conference will be held in June 2020.  Individuals interested in attending should review the web site for conference for information. The deadline to register is August.

The Day's Program

Dick Stone welcomed and introduced Dr. Bruce Law, Supt. of School District 113.  Dr. Law started his career as a high school English and Latin teacher at Monroe County Community School Corporation in Bloomington, Indiana, and later became an administrator there.   Law also served as head of school at Chicago Virtual Charter School.    He then began employment as Superintendent at Hinsdale High School District 86 in August 2013 and left that community to start in Highland Park/Deerfield this summer.

Dr. Law shared information about his background and what he has learned since becoming part of the community.  A few lessons include the importance of community. He shared his observations about the professional faculty and staff.  He noted that similar to other districts, there are facility challenges but they can be managed effectively.   He also applauded the community for the strength and participation of community members – people are engaged and have pride in the community.   He also discussed social/emotional learning and best practices within the District.

Members asked a number of questions and further dialogue was held, including but not limited to the following:

·         Inquiry pertaining to SD112 versus SD113 governance.

·         What are the main points of stress for students?

·         Concern about racism and biased actions and behavior in the community, and inquiry about the school’s approach to these important matter.

·         Information about security practices and other standards of care.

·         Student drug use and signs of gang activity; the school battles vaping, similar to other areas.

President Munk thanked Dr. Law on behalf of the Club.

There were no other matters of business. The meeting adjourned at 12:53 PM.

Thanks to Ghida Neukirch for her notes!
