Check your emails for the information about this year's Holiday party.The festivities begin Friday December 13th at 6 p.m. at the home of Fred Orkin and Sylvia Aruffo, 215 Prospect, Highland Park. Mary Beth is once again seeking baby pictures for the game. There is a $15-20 dollar limit for the gift exchange (chocolate and wine are highly coveted when it comes time to steal). Members with last names A - I bring an appetizer, J-R bring a side dish and S-Z bring a dessert. Contact Mike Babian to RSVP by December 10th.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
The 9th Annual Day of Giving event is hosted at Northwood Junior High School. Students organized clothes, toiletries, food and other necessities by donated by families. across District 112. Other students made blankets, cards and gift bags for local families. The 112 Education Foundation is proud to support this service-learning program. See below for the list of needed items in the article titled "Day of Giving 2019". Our club member Scott Coren (scoren@cityofhighwood.org) will be coordinating our effort. Volunteers needed for Friday December 6th and especially Saturday morning (the 7th) from 6 - 10 a.m. when kids are no longer involved. Businesses acting as collection points are both HP and Highwood City Halls, FBHP, HPB&T and at Northwood Junior High.

NSSD 112 and the 112 Education Foundation hosts a robotics tournament each December. This year several "referees" are needed. They will train the day of the event, so no prior knowledge is necessary. The commitment is from 8:30 a.m. -2:00 p.m. on Saturday December 14th with a pizza lunch included. Contact Bill Steinbach at bsteinbach@nssd112.org. Around the District
Deerfield Rotary Club President Pete Wirtz, asks clubs to open their hearts to support the rebuilding of Boy Scout Reservation MaKaJaWan which was hit by a severe thunderstorm on the evening of July 19th, 2019, The camp suffered substantial damage. Thousands of trees are down. Many buildings and program areas requires reconstruction. The clean-up process will be lengthy and costly. An estimated 3,000 to 5,000 scouts from in the District 6440 geographical area use this camp during the summer. Individuals and Clubs can donate to rebuild MaKaJaWan. If you wish to donate, Contact North Shore Illinois Council District, Boy Scouts of America. Attn: Rebuilding MaKaJaWan.
Happy dollars were given by: Many of our members to welcome our new member Suzy Holzer; Bill Pigati for the start of opera at Del Rio; and Len Tenner thanking the HP Interact students who showed up for a the Rotary event.
Our guest speaker was our very own Mike Mills. In April 1944, Mike enlisted in the V-5 Naval program. for high school graduates. V-5 and V-12 programs were college programs for the enlisted. They were required to attend at least two years of college (other program like the aviation program had different requirements) and both programs were eventually combined into the V-12 program.
On June 6, 1944, Mike and his Northwestern Military Academy classmates graduated ready to serve their country once their training was completed. His V-5 schooling took place at Marshall College in Missouri. He met up with two other Highland Parkers at Marshall so he felt comfortable in his new environment. While there the students we called "tarmacks". The end of WWII brought an end to the programs. All were willing and able to serve, but many became enlisted students. When asked, why he chose the Navy over the Army, he said he didn't want to get his feet dirty.
