The Day's Program
Our keynote was Janet Szlyk, Ph.D., who is the President and CEO of The Chicago Lighthouse.    Dr. Szlyk is a highly respected researcher and scientist in the field of low vision.  Dr. Szlyk assumed leadership of The Lighthouse in 2008, becoming the second woman in the organization’s 110-year history to hold the top position.   The Lighthouse provides employment opportunities for hundreds of people who are blind, visually impaired, disabled and Veterans. The Lighthouse has more than 1,000 employees, and supports 40 programs and services in the areas of rehabilitation, education and employment.

Dr. Szlyk shared about the Chicago Lighthouse programs and that the mission is to improve quality of life for those served.  The organization is the oldest social service organization in the Chicagoland area, starting in 1906.  She shared that there are high unemployment rates (70%) for those who are blind or visually impaired.  The organization is supported by business revenue from employment initiatives, grants and philanthropy.  The Chicago Lighthouse is also a clockmaker and Dr, Szlyk presented President Neukirch with a clock that displayed the Rotary logo.
