John Miller hosted John Shiel, of the National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB), as the featured speaker at the November 30th meeting of the Grayslake Rotary Club.
The presentation detailed the role of the NFIB as a lobby for independent busninesses in the U.S.

Mr. Shiel described small and independent businesses as a key source of new jobs in the marketplace, and the concerns of these businesses regarding proposed changes that may impact employee compensation and benefits, exposure to litigation, and governmental legislation.

A big part of NFIB's focus is on government representatives' voting records on issues affecting independent businesses, so John detailed the processes NFIB uses to gauge its members views on issues, to focus its lobby efforts, and to track the support or opposition of state- and national-level government representatives.

In short, John portrayed the role of NFIB as an advocate for small and independent businesses to ward off negative pressures and influence from the "Big's", i.e., Big labor, Big Business, and Big government.
