Geneva Rotary Community Service 2020Here is a message from past president Chuck Miles about two recent Geneva Rotary community service efforts. Chuck is long time board member and supporter of Association for Individual Development as well. Association for Individual Development -- AID-- 2020 Holiday Celebration I wanted to thank all of you for your support of the 38th Annual Rotary AID Holiday Celebration. While different this year, we were still able to provide gifts and some entertainment to the clients at AID We provided 142 gifts this year - compared to 89 last year - and spent a little more on each gift. 'Dr. Kim' from Changing Children's Worlds Foundation also made the CCWF Christmas Concert link available to AID clients and staff so we are able to give the clients a little Christmas celebration on Sunday December 20. We will be getting some pictures from AID as the gifts are distributed and I will make sure we get those posted on the website and Facebook. I have been a board member with AID for 12 years. Every year, AID has a last minute request for gifts to clients that otherwise would go without. This is the first year that we did not have that and all clients will receive a gift. Geneva Rotary was a big part of that. Bria Geneva Nursing Home ![]() Also, some East Side Geneva residents have worked throughout the year to offer support in various ways to Bria - the nursing home that was so hard hit at the start of the pandemic. Rotary bought donuts this summer and offered assistance to this effort over the holidays. The good news here is that the group was able to get all the items they needed and my wife volunteered to wrap some 30+ gifts for the patients and is in the process of making some cookies for the staff. All this will be delivered over the weekend Thanks for all that you do for Rotary and for the local community - particularly this past year and as we head into the first half of 2021. |

World Polio Day in Geneva Illinois Oct. 24 2020The Geneva City Council has proclaimed October 24 as World Polio Day in Geneva. The work to eradicate polio is a collaboration of Rotary International, the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the US Centers for Disease Control and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This year, the WHO declared the continent of Africa polio free. There are only 2 countries that still have active live polio, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The only other disease that has been eradicated is smallpox. Finishing the eradication is critical. WHO estimates that if these efforts would stop, within 10 years the world would see 200,000 polio cases annually. The work done by this collaboration will also speed the delivery, distribution and vaccination world wide of the vaccine for COVID 19. Over the years, the challenges of cold storage, logistics, vaccinations and monitoring will be leveraged to support this critical work. You can help by going to ENDPOLIO.ORG to learn more or to donate. Due to the generosity of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, every dollar will be matched by two dollars from the Gates Foundation. Your dollar will be turned into $3 which will pay for 6 vaccinations. ------ Photo Mayor Kevin Burns right and Geneva Rotary's Chuck Miles - Assistant District Governor - District 6440 and past club president Geneva Rotary ![]() ![]() |

Geneva Chamber Challenge Sept. 24 2020September 24 2020 -- Please ask supporters and friends to help out Geneva Rotary on September 24 2020 - The Geneva Chamber of Commerce has organized a special on line giving day for Geneva's local service clubs and charities. Absence of Swedish Days 2020 has left all with financial challenges. Check out the Chamber web page for our club. Give on Sept 24 2020. From the Challenge web page for Geneva Rotary ---- ![]() Many of you know Geneva Rotary from our Swedish Days Food Booth with Ream's Brats and Roasted Corn. This is our major fundraiser but due to COVID, Swedish Days was cancelled. Each year we make about $14,000 from this event - that's a lot of brats! With this money, we: 1) Support numerous local charities (Food for Health, Kane County Fit for Kids, Royal Family Kids Camp and Mutual Ground and more) and do local service projects - like a Thanksgiving Day Clean Up service project for a family that needs assistance. 2) Send 8-10 GHS students to Rotary Youth Leadership Camp - a weekend retreat to improve youth leadership skills 3) For 37 years, Rotary has sponsored a Holiday Party for the clients and staff of the Association for Individual Development. Approximately 100 adults with developmental disabilities are treated to a holiday meal, music, a magician and a visit from Santa delivering individualized gifts. Geneva Rotary has been a part of the community for 55 years. Our motto is 'Service Above Self'. Rotary members are dedicated to serving their communities and also participate in activities of an international nature. Geneva Rotarians have traveled to Guatemala to assist in a clean water project and Rotary International is a major force driving the eradication of polio. Geneva Rotary also sponsors students from other countries that want to spend a year studying in the US and have sponsored US students interested in studying overseas. Message from Rotary District Governor Lyle StaabLyle Staab is Rotary District 6440 governor starting as of July 1 2020-- thanks to Lyle for his Rotary service in leading our District -- District 6440 is made up of over 70 Rotary clubs in the north, northwest and west suburbs of Chicago -- Lyle has a video message on the District website and it can also be found on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcEqSikg1dI&feature=youtu.be
From Lyle--- Every year, at the stroke of midnight on July 1st, Rotary's leadership worldwide - in all 35,000 clubs and 529 Districts - is passed to a new team. Suzanne Gibson, who did such a magnificent job, became a Past District Governor, and now it's my turn to lead 6440. I'm humbled by the confidence you've placed in me, and I will work diligently to be a worthy successor to all those who have served in this role.
Last night at around 11PM, I recorded some thoughts on the year facing us and the opportunities - yes, opportunities! - we can uncover in this chaotic time. You can find the recording on the District website homepage - rotary6440.org.
We've all heard the saying - some say it's a curse - "May you live in interesting times". In these interesting times, I know we will together prove our creativity, resilience, and persistence, and make 2020-2021 the best year ever for District 6440.
Stay well, Lyle |

Club News - Geneva RotaryMessage from club president Chuck Miles April 6 2020--- These are certainly challenging times for all of us and there will be more cancellations that will impact all of us. We will get through this - together.
First and Foremost, I hope that you are all safe and healthy and following the guidance of the Governor and Health Officials. I think in this time of social distancing and staying at home, I wanted to share the 4 Way Test which helps us understand our role in keeping everyone safe, particularly number 4. For Rotary, The Four-Way Test is the cornerstone of all action. It has been for years, and it will be in the future. Of the things we think, say or do
Happy Birthday to Paul (April 5) and Judy (April 15). Also, congratulations to Karen Clutter on 2 years with Rotary on April 26.
Other news-- our Rotary youth exchange program is being suspended for this year and for the 2020-2021 year, all students to be returning home soon. Both spring 2020 sessions of Rotary Youth Leadership awards camp 'RYLA' are cancelled. Plans to run RYLA for November 2020 and spring March and April 2021 are still in place. Global Polio eradication vaccination programs are paused.
Thank you to Penny Vyskocil for club leadership as our new Virtual Meeting Coordinator using 'Zoom' Karen Clutter will also assist in this effort. Geneva Rotary is making a payment to Riverside Receptions to cover wages and gratuity for our server for our cancelled meeting weeks.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day message from District Governor GibsonIn celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Day, let us remember that discrimination is allowed to flourish if we all look the other way. If we do not use every opportunity to invite someone in, to welcome someone, to reach out, then we allow discrimination to grow. It can be frightening to be open to someone that thinks differently, looks different, has a different history or lifestyle. We must meet people where they are and welcome them to Rotary. Let’s pledge to be sure our clubs reflect our communities. That the door to a Rotary club is open to all and that, in our District, in our clubs, EVERYONE is invited to take a seat at the table.
Kind Regards,
Suzanne

Rotary Leadership Academy 2019District Governor Sarah Oliver message as to the District 6440 Leadership Academy Class of 2020.
Our leadership academy is an entirely online educational program that will broaden and deepen your Rotary knowledge and allow you to sharpen skills that maximize the effectiveness of your Rotary service. Our groups of students in past years have represented a wide range of Rotary interests and service involvements. Click here to learn some of their opinions regarding DLA.
All club members are welcome to become Leadership Academy students; and we especially encourage Presidents-elect, Presidents Nominee, and club Directors and Committee Chairs to take advantage of this opportunity. You will work with your club to analyze current activity in various areas and then make a goal and plan to improve effectiveness of that activity or expand to new ones. It can be particularly enjoyable to have two members of your club going through DLA at the same time.
The program is a six-and-a-half-month series of courses (no course in December) that covers RI Communications, Membership, Public Image, Youth Service, RI Organization, and The Rotary Foundation. Coursework for each topic is completed during the month in which that particular course is “live”, but the specific hours chosen to devote to it each week are entirely at the discretion of the student.
After you enroll, you will receive access to the online system and will complete a very short Pre-course of an hour or two. The RI Communications course begins September 1, with the first three courses taking place before late November and the second three between January 1 and April 15.
All documents required to be completed for Academy admission can be downloaded from the District website at the page for District Leadership Academy 2019-2020 or from our academy website – www.academy6440.org - through the download menu at the bottom of that home page. Submission deadline for documents and tuition is August 15, 2019.
Please do not hesitate to contact me at gov.sarah@rotary6440.org with any question you may have about DLA for this Rotary year. Anyone among us who has taken advantage of Rotary education through District Leadership Academy strongly encourages you to make 2019-2020 the year for you personally to do so.

World Polio Day October 24 2017World Polio Day (October 24) was established by Rotary International to commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk, who led the first team to develop a vaccine against poliomyelitis. Polio is a crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease. There is no cure, but there are vaccines.
In 1952, the polio epidemic became the worst outbreak in America’s history. Of nearly 58,000 cases reported that year 3,145 died and 21,269 were left with mild to disabling paralysis. In the two years before the vaccine was widely available, the average number of polio cases in the U.S. was more than 45,000. By 1962, that number dropped to 910.
In 1980, WHO certified the world free from smallpox. However, an estimated 500,000 children worldwide were still being paralysed by polio every year.
In 2016, there were a total of 37 polio cases worldwide. To date in 2017, there have been 12 polio cases worldwide. We’re 99.5% polio-free, but it’s not enough. It takes only one case, one unimmunized child to keep the polio virus alive and crippling children in our world.
What can you do? Please help us by going to: https://www.facebook.com/ RotaryDistrict6440IronLung/ “Like” and “Follow” the Facebook page, then invite others to do the same. Together we can raise awareness and eradicate polio.
