Meeting of October 9, 2025
 

This week’s meeting was held offsite at Trade Collective, an Evanston nonprofit founded in 2024 to connect ETHS students with careers in the skilled trades.

Inspiration

Karen Kring shared a quote from Jane Goodall on the importance of never losing hope.

Program

Cameron Pestinger introduced Tutoring Chicago, with speakers Eric Bugarin (Director of Recruitment & Engagement) and Ann Porto (Senior Program Manager).

 

  • Serving Chicago for 60 years, and now partnered with Hope Ignites for services in Evanston.

  • 38,000 hours of free tutoring annually; 86% of students show measurable gains.

  • Four programs: elementary, literacy, middle school, and high school.

  • 850 tutors (ages 18–85) provide weekly 90-minute sessions, in person or digital.

  • 91% of tutors build strong student relationships; 99% would recommend.

  • Tutors enjoy social and networking opportunities in addition to service.

  • Ongoing need for more tutors to meet long waitlist demand.

Orchids and Onions

 

  • Karen recognized Bjorn for securing the location, speaker, and food partnership with C&W; and Barb for giving her a ride to the meeting.

  • Josif Bozovic celebrated attending today, running the marathon this weekend, and introduced his fiancé Cara Hu, a visiting Rotarian.

  • Dave Stumpf congratulated the newly engaged couples and announced his own upcoming wedding on December 13.

World Polio Day
World Polio Day is October 24, and events are being planned around that date in Evanston and Skokie. Wear your End Polio Now shirts on October 24 and display our support for this cause.
