Meeting of January 9, 2020:

President Evelyn Lee donned her party attire to signify the start of our club’s celebration of 100 years of service to the Evanston community and beyond.

Inspiration:
Delivered by Dick Peach, it included a John Lennon story: “When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.”

Guests:
Tracy Tebear hosted two RI staffers from out-of-country.
Pam Rosenbusch hosted Pat Griffith
Viviane Forsberg, Ph.D., NU Post Doc student

Inducted:
Jane Ricciardi was introduced as a guest for the last time.
She was inducted as the newest member of our club. She remarked that she’d been president of her Interact club and was pleased to now be a full fledged Rotarian.

Paul Harris Fellow:
Dick and Jane (Peach and Lawicki, respectively) were recognized for their contributions to the RI Foundation. Dick garnered a Paul Harris, plus 5. Jane was awarded a Paul Harris, plus 2.

Orchids and Onions:
No onions!

Evelyn Lee had an orchid for her daughter who got an internship.

Dave Stumpf had an orchid for the Evanston Chamber of Commerce who would be inducting Paul Fischl as its new President and honoring Dick Peach as Community Leader of the Year at its January 24 annual meeting.

Tracy Tebear had an orchid for registering for Presidents-Elect Training Seminar (PETS). She also mentioned she’d be going to Hawaii for this year’s international convention.

Michelle Berg had an orchid for Ada, Evelyn, Pam and Bridget for helping address gala postcards.

Sergeant at Arms:
Jane Lawicki quizzed us on Prohibition. Bet you didn’t know that Evanston was not the only municipality to maintain prohibition past its repeal. Others include Oak Park, River Forest, Glencoe, Winnetka, Kenilworth, Western Springs, Wilmette, La Grange, Park Ridge, Wheaton, and Maywood.

Speaker:
Megan Van Treeck Client services specialist for Northwestern University Sports, talked about her career path from an owner of Irish Connoiseur in Glenview to the Northwestern University sports program. She offered insights into the resources she used and paths she took to move from one career she loved to a new one that she looks forward to participating in each day.
