When Mariana Day moved in 1989 to the small beach town of Chacala, in Nayarit, Mexico, she noticed that the surrounding rural areas struggled to maintain schools. And most children weren’t able to go beyond an eighth-grade education. Today marks one year since Nigeria last reported a polio case caused by wild poliovirus, putting the country on the brink of eradicating the paralyzing disease.
The last case was reported on 24 July 2014 in the northern state of Kano. If no cases are reported in the coming weeks, the World Health Organization is expected to remove Nigeria from the list of countries where polio is endemic, leaving just two: Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Nigeria is the last polio-endemic country in Africa. The continent is poised to reach its own first full year without any illness from the virus on 11 August.

The Rotary Club of Cary-Grove will be sponsoring a Steak Fry dinner which will be held in conjunction with Cary Main Street Fest on Saturday, September 19, 2015. The event will be catered by Coleman's in the Park. Tickets for the event are $30 per person and includes dinner and drink as well as the admission donation for Cary Main Street Fest. They can be purchased from the club's membership or from Coleman's in the Park. Proceeds from this event will benefit the Cary Food Pantry.
The schedule for volunteers needed are between 4:00 and 8:00 PM. Please let Dave Miller know if you are available to help this Saturday.

A cowboy walks out of a bar and a second later comes back in, mighty mad. "Okay," he growls. "which one of you sidewindin' hombres went outside an' painted mah horse bright red while I was a-drinkin'?" Nobody answers, so the cowpoke draws his six-shooter and yells, "I said, which one of you mangy polecats painted mah horse red?"
Slowly, one of the cowboys at the bar stands up. He's six feet, nine inches tall, and he pulls a small cannon from his holster. "I done it," he growls. The first cowboy puts his gun back in his holster and says, "Just wanted to let you know that the first coat is dry."
The last Thursday of the month social event will be held at the Cary Country Club on September 24 beginning at 6:00p.m. Please let Steve or Sandi know if you will be attending.
I know that many, MANY of our Club members are Cubs fans, so I wanted to make sure everyone received this special invitation—think about it as the cause being for the better. If we have six interested individuals, we should consider buying into the 10-admissions package and donate the four to Veteran patients.

On Friday evening, October 2nd we are hosting the 2015 District 6440 Rotary Road Trip to Miller Park. The game is first in the final series of the season, and features the Chicago Cubs at the Brewers for what may be a make or break playoff situation for the Cubs! Our event will begin with a Wisconsin style tailgate party at 5:00 p.m. and game time is 7:10 p.m.

Norge Ski Club is looking for volunteers to assist with their Fall Jump on October 3rd and 4th (Saturday/Sunday). They need volunteers to check ID's at the gate and distribute wristbands. They expect the heaviest traffic on Saturday and Sunday between noon and 3:00 PM and a steady stream between 4:00 and 6:00 PM on Saturday. Rotary is invited to bring informational material, banner (maybe the Rotary Blowup sign). They will provide a tent and chairs. Interact has also been invited to assist. Today's special guest was 2005 - 2006 Youth Exchange Student Germana Dalberto. Germana joined us via "Skype" from Jerusalem where she is working on her PH.D.. Her curriculum is focused on Palestine. Germana spoke to the club briefly on an idea she has for a new joint International project. As next year's Rotary focus is on Literacy, Germana is suggesting a joint venture with her Father's Rotary club in Rio Grande du Sol. It is suggested that this be a "hands-on" project with 5-10 members traveling to Brazil to assist in the construction of a library. Currently, there isn't a library available for adults in their area and Germana and the Rotarians there would like to do something about that. Steve & Germana will provide more details as they become available, but for now if you are thinking this sounds interesting, update you inoculations and brush up on your Portuguese.
As Rotarians, we end each of our weekly meetings by reciting The Four-Way Test. Building on the principles outlined in that document, we should also pay attention to the phrases outlined in the Rotary Code of Conduct:
