Peace Symposium speaker wants world to spend more on education, less on war
When former Costa Rican president Oscar Arias was eight years old, his country abolished its military and turned its focus instead to human rights and peace. Rotaract clubs receive awards for their innovative initiatives
A project launched by members of Rotaract in Uttar Pradesh, India, is liberating women who emptied dry toilets with their hands by teaching them skills that enable them to earn a living for their families. Rotary, USAID collaboration improves sanitation facilities in Ghana
According to a 2012 report by UNICEF and the World Health Organization, Ghana has made great strides in providing its people with clean drinking water. But access to better sanitation has lagged. Only about 14 percent of Ghanaians have access to improved facilities, compared with the 54 percent target set for 2015 by the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. Green Bay Love Stories

Sandy Sullivan, author of "Green Bay Love Stories" was the guest speaker at The Rotary Club of Cary-Grove's weekly meeting. Sandy provided an interesting overview of the years she was involved with the Green Bay Packer organization. Her book, "Green Bay Love Stories", has been acknowledged as a significant historical account of the Packer Glory Years and the foreword is written by Packers Hall of Fame great, Paul Hornung.

Born in the small town of Mauston, Wisconsin, Sandy moved to Milwaukee after graduating from High School. She worked at a major department store selling dresses where her supervisor encouraged her to become a model. She took the advice and attended modeling school. After graduating there, she was offered a job working as a receptionist with the modeling school. Her job was to place models with the various requests that were received by potential customers. One day, she received a call from Tom Miller who was the Assistant General Manager of the Green Bay Packers. They were looking for someone to sell tickets at a week-long Milwaukee Sentinel Sports show. She got the job and that opportunity dramatically impacted her life, including her meeting her future husband.

Sandy shared many of her experiences with the Packer organization, but there are many more stories available in her book, which is available on-line.

This year's installation dinner will again be hosted by Dave & Andi Miller. The event will be held at Lake Julian on June 23 beginning at 6:00 p.m. Guests are welcome, but please let Dave or Sue know who will be in attendance.

National Night Out Volunteers Needed

At the monthly board meeting, the officers agreed to participate in this year's National Night Out event. The event will be held on August 4th. Community Service Chairman, Pat Finlon announced today that he will be asking for volunteer signups in the next couple of days. You can also volunteer through clubrunner by clicking on this link. Cary Crime Stoppers Golf Outing

At the board meeting on Tuesday, the officers agreed to a $100 sponsorship for this year's Cary Crime Stoppers Golf Outing. Community Service Chairman Pat Finlon stated that volunteers might be needed for the day of the event, which will be held on Friday, August 14 at Chalet Hills Golf Club. More details about the volunteer needs will be available in the next couple of weeks. Please let Pat know if you are available to help out.

Joke of the Week

Two boys are playing hockey on a pond in a park in Toronto, when one is attacked by a rabid Rottweiler. Thinking quickly, the other boy takes his stick, wedges it down the dog's collar and twists, breaking the dog's neck.

A reporter who was strolling by sees the incident, and rushes over to interview the boy. "Young Leafs Fan Saves Friend From Vicious Animal", he writes in his notebook.

"But I'm not a Leafs fan," the little hero said. "Sorry, since we're in Toronto, I just assumed you were." said the reporter and starts again. "Little Jays Fan Rescues Friend From Horrific Attack!" he continued writing in his notebook.

"I'm not a Jays fan either," the boy said.

"I assumed everyone in Toronto was either a Leafs or a Jays fan. What team do you root for?" the reporter asked. "I'm a Montreal Canadiens fan." the child said.

The reporter starts a new sheet in his notebook and writes, "Little French Brat from Montreal Kills Beloved Family Pet."

Future International Project

Today's special guest was 2005 - 2006 Youth Exchange Student Germana Dalberto. Germana joined us via "Skype" from Jerusalem where she is working on her PH.D.. Her curriculum is focused on Palestine. Germana spoke to the club briefly on an idea she has for a new joint International project. As next year's Rotary focus is on Literacy, Germana is suggesting a joint venture with her Father's Rotary club in Rio Grande du Sol. It is suggested that this be a "hands-on" project with 5-10 members traveling to Brazil to assist in the construction of a library. Currently, there isn't a library available for adults in their area and Germana and the Rotarians there would like to do something about that. Steve & Germana will provide more details as they become available, but for now if you are thinking this sounds interesting, update you inoculations and brush up on your Portuguese.

As Rotarians, we end each of our weekly meetings by reciting The Four-Way Test. Building on the principles outlined in that document, we should also pay attention to the phrases outlined in the Rotary Code of Conduct:

As a Rotarian, I will

Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviors and activities
Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary
Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others
Be fair in all dealings with others and threat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings
Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society
Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the qualify of life in my community
Honor the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavor or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians
Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship
