As we move into the Holiday Season it's appropriate to mention that this year's McHenry County Police Charities' "Shop with a Cop" event will be held on December 10th. In the past, club members have contributed to this worthwhile program, each writing an individual check to the club and then the Club Treasurer writing one check to the organization. Our President has kicked off this event with a $100 pledge. Those interested in participating are asked to give your checks, made payable to "Cary-Grove Rotary Charitable Fund", to Steve C.

This is being sent to all Club members to provide an opportunity to review your schedules in the event you'd like to assist with this project. We'll be discussing this further at the Board meeting.

A man and a boy go into a barber's. The man has a trim then says to the boy, "You get your hair cut while I go to the supermarket and do some shopping". The boy has his hair cut but the man does not return. "Looks like your dad's forgotten you're here", says the barber. "That wasn't my dad", replies the boy. "That guy grabbed me on the street, said 'How would you like a free haircut' and dragged me in here".
The Rotary Club of Cary-Grove was honored to be visited by Rotary District 6440 Governor, Don Brewer and his wife, Roseann. Fellowship was enjoyed by all on Wednesday evening when Don and Roseann met with Board members at Jameson's Charhouse to review the goals and aspirations of the Club. Governor Don met with the entire Rotary membership at its regular weekly meeting on Thursday.
Don's message to the membership was to "focus on what you want for your communities. What can you do as a club to make Cary and Fox River Grove better communities." He shared a video entitled, "Seeing Red Cars" by Laura Goodrich. The theme of the video was to get individuals to focus on what they want instead of what they don't want. He also discussed the importance of having "our other" person to whom we can turn to for guidance and support. He referenced Dr. Henry Cloud's book, "The Power of the Other", and urged each member to find their "Other." He used the example of a three-legged stool to explain the stability each person needs to be successful in life. The first two legs represent your physical and emotional strengths. The third represents the fellowship. This includes friends and family, but also those that you can call upon to assist in your times of need.
At its weekly meeting, the Rotary Club of Cary-Grove presented a check for $500 to The Home of the Sparrow. Making the presentation is club secretary, Sue Maifield. Receiving the check are HOS representatives Debbie McGraw and Michelle Lussman. The donation will be used this winter for maintenance of the Fox River Grove Transitional House.
The Friends of the Fox River Grove Library will be holding its semi-annual book sale on November 3rd & 4th. You can drop off books you would like to contribute at the library between the dates of October 28th & November 2nd. Volunteers are needed between those dates to help sort the donated books in order to be prepared for the sale. Please consider volunteering your time for this worthwhile event.
Rotary International has declared October 24th as "End Polio Now Day" and has asked local Rotary Clubs to help promote awareness of the significant advancements made toward the eradication of this disease over the past 30 years. A special thanks to Rotarians Dave Miller and Ted Wagner for placing "End Polio Now" awareness signs at their business locations. Dave has a billboard posted at the intersection of Jandus Road and Route 14, and Ted has information on his digital signs located at Stone Hill, Foxmoor & Cary Commons shopping centers.

One of President Steve's goals this year is to have at least one member join a Rotary Action Group or Rotary Fellowship Group. As stated on RI's website, a Rotarian Action Group is an autonomous group of Rotarians, family members, program participants and alumni who are experts in a particular field, such as micro-credit or water and sanitation. More information about these groups and their purpose can be found on RI's website.
Rotary Fellowships are independent groups of Rotarians, family members, program participants and alumni who share a common passion. Being part of a fellowship is a fun way to make friends from around the world. Again, more detailed information is available at this link to RI's website.
If you haven't all ready done so, take the time to click on the two links above and see if there may be a group that fits with your interests. It's a great way to make new friends and to share common interests with Rotarians from around the world.
When we introduced Rotary Club Central in 2012, it revolutionized goal tracking and planning for clubs and districts — no more filling out paper club-planning forms or passing along boxes of historical club information every time a new leader took office.
Rotary Club Central offered clubs and districts a quantifiable way to begin measuring local and global impact, specifically membership initiatives, service activities, and Rotary Foundation giving.
But as with any technological advancement, in a few short years, Rotary Club Central began to show its age, and Rotarians took notice. They...
At its January 2017 meeting, the Rotary International Board of Directors adopted a new zone structure for Rotary clubs.
Rotary bylaws require the Board to complete a comprehensive review of the 34 Rotary zones no less often than every eight years to ensure that each zone has an approximately equal number of Rotarians. The Board’s previous review of the zones occurred in 2008.
The Board earlier approved the creation of three regional workgroups to develop rezoning proposals for Asia, Europe/Africa, and the Americas. These workgroups comprised one representative (either a current director,...

When Teguest Yilma helped found the Rotary Club of Addis Ababa Entoto in 2002, she thought polio had already been eradicated from most of the world. But while Ethiopia had been free of the disease, Yilma was shocked to learn that new cases had started cropping up in surrounding countries such as Somalia.
“I was thinking, it’s not possible, we can’t be free if the countries around us are not free,” she says. Yilma, the managing editor of Capital, Ethiopia’s largest English weekly newspaper, has brought a journalist’s skills to the fight against polio. She became vice chair of the Ethiopia...
