More than 20,000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed every year in Sri Lanka, and many of them prove fatal. The Rotary Club of Colombo, Sri Lanka, set out 10 years ago to save some of those lives by establishing the Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Centre.

An engineer dies and reports to the pearly gates. St. Peter checks his dossier and says, "Ah, you're an engineer — you're in the wrong place."
So the engineer reports to the gates of hell and is let in. Pretty soon, the engineer gets dissatisfied with the level of comfort in hell, and starts designing and building improvements. After a while, they've got air conditioning, flush toilets and escalators, and the engineer is becoming a pretty popular guy.
One day God calls Satan up on the telephone and asks with a sneer, "So, how's it going down there in hell?" Satan replies, "Hey, things are going great. We've got air conditioning, flush toilets and escalators, and there's no telling what this engineer is going to come up with next." God replies, "What??? You've got an engineer? That's a mistake — he should never have gotten down there; send him up here." Satan says, "No way! I like having an engineer on the staff, and I'm keeping him."
God says, "Send him back up here or I'll sue." Satan laughs uproariously and answers, "Yeah right. And just where are YOU going to get a lawyer?"

At the monthly board meeting, the officers agreed to participate in this year's National Night Out event. The event will be held on August 4th. Community Service Chairman, Pat Finlon announced today that he will be asking for volunteer signups in the next couple of days. Information about this event is available on the Village's website.

At the June board meeting, the officers agreed to a $100 sponsorship for this year's Cary Crime Stoppers Golf Outing. Community Service Chairman Pat Finlon stated that volunteers might be needed for theday of the event, which will be held on Friday, August 14 at Chalet Hills Golf Club. As a part of the Cary "Fall Fest", we are planning to put together a "Steak-Fry Dinner". We will need membership volunteers and advanced ticket sales. Dave Miller is heading up this committee and I am sure would be interested in committee volunteers. Please let him know if you are willing to help in the planning as well as the event itself.
The Rotary Club of Cary-Grove held it's annual installation picnic at Lake Julian. A special thank you to both Dave and Andi Miller for again hosting this year's event. Dave Miller was the out-going president having served in that position the past year. In-coming offices for the 2015-2016 year are Steve Cherveny (President), Jack Giel (President-Elect), Sue Maifield (Secretary) and Bob Blumberg (Treasurer).
The weather was perfect and the mosquitoes managed to stay away from the gathering of guests who were present for the celebration. What a great venue and wonderful food prepared and served by Bret Coleman,"Coleman's in the Park".
In addition to Rotarian spouses and their families at the Installation picnic, additional guests included Assistant District Governor, Jim Wales and his family;Cary-Grove ChamberExecutive Director, Brad Ball and his family; some of our scholarship recipients and their families, past recipients of the Jack Renskers Community Hope Award and this year's recipient, Chaille Gleason.
A warm-felt thank you to Dave for his year of service to the club, and congratulations to Steve and his new slate of officers for the coming year.
The Rotary Club of Cary-Grove was please to honor this year's 2015 recipient of the Jack Renskers Community Hope award. Chaille Gleason was recognized for her giving of her time and organizing Elena's Enchanted Garden.
Elena is a young girl who is very limited to being able to be out-of-doors. While many have donated their time to work on the project, Chaille initiated everything and continues to be of support to the family. Many have cleaned the back yard, planted, mulched a beautiful area that Elena can see through a window. Lights were strung on the swing set so she could swing at night when allergens and dust are minimal. The Enchanted Garden is just one of the projects to which she contributes her talents. Thank you Chaille for "Being a Gift to the World."
Today's special guest was 2005 - 2006 Youth Exchange Student Germana Dalberto. Germana joined us via "Skype" from Jerusalem where she is working on her PH.D.. Her curriculum is focused on Palestine. Germana spoke to the club briefly on an idea she has for a new joint International project. As next year's Rotary focus is on Literacy, Germana is suggesting a joint venture with her Father's Rotary club in Rio Grande du Sol. It is suggested that this be a "hands-on" project with 5-10 members traveling to Brazil to assist in the construction of a library. Currently, there isn't a library available for adults in their area and Germana and the Rotarians there would like to do something about that. Steve & Germana will provide more details as they become available, but for now if you are thinking this sounds interesting, update you inoculations and brush up on your Portuguese.
As Rotarians, we end each of our weekly meetings by reciting The Four-Way Test. Building on the principles outlined in that document, we should also pay attention to the phrases outlined in the Rotary Code of Conduct:
As a Rotarian, I will

Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary
Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others
