When Mariana Day moved in 1989 to the small beach town of Chacala, in Nayarit, Mexico, she noticed that the surrounding rural areas struggled to maintain schools. And most children weren’t able to go beyond an eighth-grade education. Day, who is a member of the Rotary Club of Bahía de Jaltemba-La Peñita, in Nayarit, had started a local scholarship program before she joined Rotary. Today marks one year since Nigeria last reported a polio case caused by wild poliovirus, putting the country on the brink of eradicating the paralyzing disease.
The last case was reported on 24 July 2014 in the northern state of Kano. If no cases are reported in the coming weeks, the World Health Organization is expected to remove Nigeria from the list of countries where polio is endemic, leaving just two: Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Nigeria is the last polio-endemic country in Africa. The continent is poised to reach its own first full year without any illness from the virus on 11 August.

Even in the United States, with its considerable resources, there are 36 million adults who can’t read better than the average third-grader, according to the international nonprofit ProLiteracy. In Detroit, Michigan, a widely cited 2003 survey conducted by the National Institute for Literacy found that almost half of residents over age 16 were functionally illiterate -- unable to use reading, speaking, writing, and computer skills in everyday life....

On Friday evening, October 2nd we are hosting the 2015 District 6440 Rotary Road Trip to Miller Park. The game is first in the final series of the season, and features the Chicago Cubs at the Brewers for what may be a make or break playoff situation for the Cubs! Our event will begin with a Wisconsin style tailgate party at 5:00 p.m. and game time is 7:10 p.m.

The Rotary Club Membership met at Grover's in Fox River Grove for the fourth Thursday Social event. At the event, Foundation Chair, Linda Trexler, was honored to present, founding member, Jack Renskers, with his Paul Harris Plus 2. This means that over $3,000 has been donated to the Paul Harris Foundation in Jack's name. What a tremendous milestone for Jack.
The Seven Dwarfs were marching through the forest one day and accidently fell in a deep, dark ravine. Snow White, who was following along behind them, peered over the edge of the steep chasm and called out to the fallen dwarfs. From the depths of the dark hole a voice shouted back, "The Chicago Bears are Super Bowl contenders."
Snow White thought for a moment and then said, "Thank God...at least Dopey survived!"
The Rotary Club of Cary-Grove will be sponsoring a Steak Fry dinner which will be held in conjunction with Cary Main Street Fest on Saturday, September 19, 2015. The event will be catered by Coleman's in the Park. Tickets for the event are $30 per person and includes dinner and drink as well as the admission donation for Cary Main Street Fest. They can be purchased from the club's membership or from Coleman's in the Park. Proceeds from this event will benefit the Cary Food Pantry.
Today's special guest was 2005 - 2006 Youth Exchange Student Germana Dalberto. Germana joined us via "Skype" from Jerusalem where she is working on her PH.D.. Her curriculum is focused on Palestine. Germana spoke to the club briefly on an idea she has for a new joint International project. As next year's Rotary focus is on Literacy, Germana is suggesting a joint venture with her Father's Rotary club in Rio Grande du Sol. It is suggested that this be a "hands-on" project with 5-10 members traveling to Brazil to assist in the construction of a library. Currently, there isn't a library available for adults in their area and Germana and the Rotarians there would like to do something about that. Steve & Germana will provide more details as they become available, but for now if you are thinking this sounds interesting, update you inoculations and brush up on your Portuguese.
As Rotarians, we end each of our weekly meetings by reciting The Four-Way Test. Building on the principles outlined in that document, we should also pay attention to the phrases outlined in the Rotary Code of Conduct:
