We had our “Virtual 50/50 Raffle” to help fund our support of Rotary International’s Every Rotarian Every Year (EREY) program for 2021-22.
Of the random names drawn, Joe T (unable to be present) was our winner. He had Pat choose #17 on his behalf. The random program chose #12, so he did not win the “big pot”, currently valued at $843.50. The next drawings numbers will be from #1-#17.
Remember, that if you are a participating member and are unable to attend, you may designate someone to represent you. Members have the opportunity to change their minds regarding participation by contacting Cindy at CGRotary2020@gmal.com

Last Sunday, April 18, The 100 Club did a presentation at the Cary Fire Station. Pat spoke, as well as representatives from the 100 Club. Phil, Sue and Sandi also attended. In the photo are Lauren Petoskey, Regan Raymond, Pat Finlon and Assistant Fire Chief, K. Desiree.
Phil has met with Interact to ask students to help distribute posters about picnic shelter fundraising around town. As Phil as delivering posters to businesses across from Stryker, two of them expressed interest in helping more.
District Training is May 15 and 2021-22 Officers and Chairs are strongly encouraged to attend. Watch for registration information. (There is a link to registration for this training in a separate article in this bulletin).
Our guest speaker today was Christopher Stein. Christopher has been recommended by the District as a speaker. So far, he has done 45 presentations since January of this year. There is also an article in the October 2020 Rotarian about Operation Pollination. He has been a park ranger with the National Park Service and currently works with the National Heritage Areas (HRA) and the Large Landscape Initiatives. In addition, he serves on Rotary District 5970 Parks and Pollination Committee and ESRAG (Environmental Sustainability Rotarian Action Group (www.esrag.org). Christopher stated that there are 55 National Heritage Areas in the United States and currently 35 are involved with Operation Pollination. Efforts include planting/replanting NHAs, as well as private lands with plants that attract pollinators.
A major concern, according to Christopher, is that pollinators, such as bees, wasps, beetles, flies, butterflies, etc., have declined by 45% over the past 50 years. This decline in pollinators directly affects our food supplies. Chris encouraged the Club to enter into a Pollinator Resolution making a pledge to take steps to restore/develop and protect pollinator habitat. Chris stated that "if you like to eat, you should be interested in this topic." Rotary Clubs are encouraged to develop a resolution that can be shared with our Rotary District. Once the resolution is created, the next step is to create a community project such as planting pollinator friendly plants in public or private spaces. The next Board Meeting will be held on Monday, May 3, 2021 at 6:30 PM via ZOOM. If you have any items you wish to have discussed at this meeting, please let Phil know by Friday, April 30th.

The Scholarship Committee (Dave, Phil, Sue , Sandi) has received the scholarship applications from Cary-Grove High School. The applications are being reviewed and the committee will meet next Tuesday to make our selections for the Decker and Club Scholarships. The deadline for getting our selections to the high school is April 30.
The Club’s Investment Committee, which currently consists of Patrick Finlon, Linda Trexler and Ed Connelly will be meeting to discuss Club investment strategy. Pat Finlon had a discussion with Paul Schifferer, Financial Advisor of Edward Jones and he is willing to meet with members of the Investment Committee. If you are interested in participating in this Committee send Pat Finlon an e-mail.
District 6440 Spring Training is scheduled for May 15th between the hours of 9:00am and 12:00pm. Registration for this event is available by clicking on the 5/15 date on the district's calendar, or by clicking this link.
This year's District Conference is scheduled for June 4 - June 6th and will be a Zoom formatted event. Check the District's website for information concerning this event.
A redneck and a lawyer are seated next to each other on a plane. The lawyer thinks the redneck looks like an easy touch, so he says, "To pass the time why don't we ask each other questions. If you don't know the answer to my question, you pay me $5 and if I don't know the answer to yours, I pay you $50. "Okay," says the redneck. "So what's your question?" The lawyer asks, "What's the distance from the earth to the moon?" The redneck shakes his head, reaches into his pocket and gives the lawyer $5. "Okay," says the lawyer. "Now what's you question?" The rednecks asks, "What goes up a hill with three legs and comes down with four?" The lawyer is baffled, he thinks long and hard but eventually has to give the redneck $50. "So what's the answer?" asks the lawyer. The redneck shrugs, reaches into his pocket and hands the lawyer another $5.
District 6440 will be hosting a golf outing on May 15th to benefit its RYLA program participants. The event will be held at Village Links Golf Course in Glen Ellyn. Visit their website for registration and additional information.
Earlier this year, the Village of Cary announced its partnership with The Rotary Club of Cary-Grove in the development of a new park, "Cary Lake at Rotary Park". The Rotary Club is pleased to announce that it has begun soliciting donations for the construction of a picnic shelter that will be located near the main parking area of this facility. The pavilion will provide another feature to the park for the benefit of everyone that visits for many years to come. The estimated cost of this project is $70,000. The club is seeking the support of community members and local business owners in order to bring this to a quick, successful completion. Contributions are being accepted at the Club's Go Fund Me Page: http://gf.me/u/y6kq5f.
Project updates will be posted to our website and FaceBook page as construction at the site progresses.
The Chamber will be hosting a "First Swing" golf outing on Friday, April 30th at Foxford Hills Golf Club. The event will only be 9 holes and will begin with a shotgun start at 2:00pm. The Otto and Fran Walter Foundation has pledged $15.5 million to The Rotary Foundation to start a Rotary Peace Center in the Middle East or North Africa.
