No Meetings - July 5th and July 12th
Due to the 4th of July Holiday and our Installation Dinner, the Rotary Club of Cary-Grove will not be having their regularly scheduled meetings at the Park District on Thursdays July 5th and July 12th.  Our next regular meeting will be at the Park District on Thursday, July 19th.
Today's Winner
At our Installation Dinner the winner of our 50/50 raffle was Assistant Governor, Karen Hutchings.  Karen generously donated her winnings back to the club.  The club will, in turn, donate the winnings to the Rotary Foundation on her behalf.  Thank you so very much, Karen.
Installation of 2018-2019 Club Officers
A new slate of officers were installed at the Rotary Club of Cary-Grove's Installation Dinner held at Lake Julian. The officers are Pat Finlon (President), Chuck Barrett (President-Elect), Sue Maifield (Secretary) and Steve Cherveny (Treasurer). The event was catered by Coleman's in the Park and, at the request of the President, included a good-old fashion picnic menu of Brats, Burgers, Barbecue Chicken and Yummy Potato Salad.

Special recognition was given to Neil Donner and Allan Stewart. While no longer members, they were two of the original members when the club was formed in January of 1970. President Pat Finlon presented both with Founding Member pins. Also in attendance were Cary-Grove HS graduates who were recognized as being scholarship recipients. This year, the Rotary Club of Cary-Grove contributed $18,000 in scholarships to students who will be pursuing higher education.

A high point of the evening was the presentation of the Jack Renskers Community of Hope Award. Named after long-time Rotarian and Founding Member Jack Renskers, this award is given to a non-rotarian within the community who volunteers their time and whose efforts are often under recognized, and may not well known in the Cary & Fox River Grove area. As part of this award, the Rotary Club makes a $1,000 contribution to the Rotary International Foundation in their name and presents the recipient with a Paul Harris Fellow Award. This year's recipient is William Pickett with the Citizens Police Academy.
Rotary Club of Cary-Grove Scholarship Recipients
Cary-Grove High School graduates were recognized at the recent Installation Dinner of the Rotary Club of Cary-Grove. Pictured above from left to right are Joe Stanley, Robert Deischer, President Pat Finlon, Kelly Crowther, Sarah Pilut and Isabel Stenho. Thanks to the generous contribution of past member Tom Decker, the club is able to assist students who wish to pursue higher education, at both vocational and academic institutions. This year, the club awarded $18,000 in scholarships.
Paul Harris Match Program

The Board has approved the promotion of a Paul Harris Match Program to members in good standing of the Rotary Club of Cary-Grove:

  1. Any member that has not yet achieved their first Paul Harris Fellow may make a cash donation up to $500, and the club will match two-to-one towards his/her first Paul Harris Fellow.
  2. Any member who is already a Paul Harris Fellow may make a cash donation up to $500, and the club will match one-to-one towards his/her next Paul Harris level.
  3. Any member who is already a Paul Harris Fellow may make a cash donation up to $500, and the club will match one-to-one towards making another Non-Rotarian a Paul Harris Fellow.
The program will run from 7/1/18 thru 12/13/18.  Checks should be made payable to “The Cary-Grove Rotary Charitable Fund” and delivered to Linda Trexler along with the printed name of the individual, address and relationship to the Rotarian requesting the match (e.g. Spouse, Son/Daughter, Grandchild, Friend, etc.).  Please contact Linda Trexler, Foundation Chair (847-462-1087) if you interested in taking advantage of this program.

Lockout Hunger Box
Listed below is verbiage printed on the email that was circulated by District 6440 this week concerning the "Lockout Hunger Boxes." As discussed at our meeting this morning, the District has reserved 50 boxes that will be distributed to clubs that are interested in collected for this worthwhile program:

"The most important time of year for food collection is upon us – summer! Millions of children depend on free or reduced-price breakfasts and lunches throughout the school year. But when school is out, oftentimes these children don’t know where their next meal is coming from. Local food banks step up to help but they struggle to keep food supplies on their shelves during the summer months. Local food banks – and children – everywhere need your help for their food service programs.

Now is the perfect time to fill your Lockout Hunger Boxes with non-perishable food items to fill the need in your local community. We know that collectively, we can meet the need for food and be the difference-makers in our communities! Community service and corporate responsibility are deeply rooted at Accuform (the supplier of these boxes). Accuform believes that making a difference in the world isn’t only a vision – it’s a mission that brings communities together. Most of our District 6440 clubs support our local food pantries, so let's fill our Lockout Hunger Boxes and help feed the little tummies!

If your club is interested in locking out hunger, contact me for your FREE box (limit 1 per club) today – don’t forget to take pictures of your box and use #LockoutHunger on your favorite social media page.

The Lockout Hunger Box is made out of a cardboard material and is the perfect size for a front lobby, office space, or cafe inside. The exact dimensions are: 43H x 24W x 18D inches. Assembly instructions are attached.

We've reserved 50 of these for our district, first come first served, through June 30. The only cost to your club may be a small shipping charge."

Little Free Libraries Ribbon Cutting
Members fron The Friends of the Fox River Grove Memorial Library and the Rotary Club of Cary-Grove dedicate the opening of the Little Free Libraries that were installed in Fox River Grove earlier this spring. One is located in Lion’s Park (pictured here), the other is in the Stone Hill Shopping Center located at Routes 22 & 14 in Fox River Grove.
Joke of the Week
An engineer, a manager and a programmer are driving down a steep mountain road. The brakes fail and the car careens down the road until it hits a tree. They all get out and discuss how to fix the car. The manager says, "To fix this problem we need to organize a committee and develop a mission statement." The engineer says, "That would take too long. I have my penknife here. I'll take apart the brake system, isolate the problem, and correct it." The programmer says, "No, I think we should push the car back up the road and see if it happens again."
Cubs vs Brewers
The Rotary Club of North Chicago will again be hosting the Tailgate Party and seating for the Cubs vs Brewers at Miller Park on Monday, September 3, 2018 (Labor Day).  Cost of tickets is currently $75 per person.  More information will follow.  For now, save the date and let Pat Finlon know if you are interested in attending.
Tiffany Au's Website
As mentioned at today's meeting by Sue, Tiffany Au has developed a website "The Greatest Wedding Ever Donated". Tiffany is a graduate of Cary-Grove High School and is a past recipient of the Decker Scholarship awarded by the Rotary Club of Cary-Grove. Her website highlights her upcoming wedding to Caleb Remington and talks about the work they are doing together to raise funds and awareness for the fight against Cystic Fibrosis. Visit her site http://www.thegwed.com to learn more about their efforts and to learn how you can contribute toward this wonderful cause.

Rotary Action & Fellowship Groups
Rotarian Action Groups are autonomous groups of Rotarians, family members, program participants and alumni who are experts in a particular field, such as micro-credit or water and sanitation. More information about these groups and their purpose can be found on RI's website.

Rotary Fellowships are independent groups of Rotarians, family members, program participants and alumni who share a common passion. Being part of a fellowship is a fun way to make friends from around the world.  Again, more detailed information is available at this link to RI's website.

If you haven't all ready done so, take the time to click on the two links above and see if there may be a group that fits with your interests.  It's a great way to make new friends and to share common interests with Rotarians from around the world.
