Members of the Rotary Club of San Francisco Evening meet three times a month at a wine bar after work, share a social outing once a month, and promote all their activities on social media like Meetup and Facebook.
As the first evening club in the city, it has attracted many young professionals from Silicon Valley tech firms whose work schedules keep them from joining a more traditional club that meets for breakfast or lunch. But more than that, the evening format has helped the club grow by 30 percent since it received its charter in mid-2013.

Blighted schools in the mountain city of Peja in western Kosovo are a reminder of the ethnic strife and war that ravaged this area in the 1990s.
To restore ruined sanitation facilities in some of those schools, local Rotary members recently partnered with their counterparts from Colorado, USA. Though residents have been slowly rebuilding the city's infrastructure after years of neglect under earlier governments, most resources are going to improve roads, rebuild homes, and create new businesses. Little money remains to restore the schools.

Rotary International released an additional $34.8 million in grants to support polio immunization activities in 10 countries, including Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan, the three countries where the disease has never been stopped.
The funds, whose release was announced 20 January, will be used by the World Health Organization and UNICEF for polio immunization and surveillance activities in the 10 countries, as well as to provide technical assistance in several other countries in Africa.

The Rotary Club of Cary-Grove welcomed its newest member at their weekly meeting this morning. Phil Stanko has visited the club's meetings for the past couple of months and decided that the timing was right for him to become a member. Phil is retired from a career in Education were he was a wrestling and track coach at Lake Zurich High School. Phil lives in Cary and is excited about working with the Rotary Club's Scholarship Committee. This year, the club is targeting $15,000 of scholarships to be awarded to students at Cary-Grove High School who are members of the Rotary Interact Club. Welcome, Phil.
If you were not able to attend this morning's meeting, Dave gave an update on Sue's skiing vacation in Colorado. She suffered a fracture of the Tibia & Fibula while attempting to ski through some deep snow. As Sue's email said, she went one way and her ski and boot went another. I'm sure she'd love to hear from you.
The reception of "Friends of the Fox River Grove Library" will be held on Friday, February 27th. They have invited members of our club to be present at that event, which will be held at the Algonquin Road School beginning at 6:30 p.m. The school is located at 975 Algonquin Road, Fox River Grove.
Talented author and professional storyteller Jim May will be the guest speaker. His storytelling is heartfelt and entertaining! All of the Young Author submissions will be displayed so that you can see who wrote the wonderful stories you have been reading and judging. There will also be light refreshments.

Historically, Midwest PETS has asked that each attending PE have a quick club engagement project and bring items that we will then donate to a local charity. Two years ago all 350 clubs brought canned goods and gifted them to a local food pantry; Last year after the devastating tornado in the Washington, Illinois area we donated books to their local library to help restock their empty book shelves.
This year, due to the local need for the homeless in Northeastern Illinois, your Governor-elects have opted for what we are calling "A Pair and a Spare", and are asking club members to contribute "new" children or adult socks and underwear. All items will be picked up, at the Westin, by the local Salvation Army for distribution to the homeless Veterans and the needy.
Steve will be attending the PETS meeting and will be taking with him the socks and underwear collected by our members. Please bring your contribution to either the February 26th or March 5th meeting.
Today's special guest was 2005 - 2006 Youth Exchange Student Germana Dalberto. Germana joined us via "Skype" from Jerusalem where she is working on her PH.D.. Her curriculum is focused on Palestine. Germana spoke to the club briefly on an idea she has for a new joint International project. As next year's Rotary focus is on Literacy, Germana is suggesting a joint venture with her Father's Rotary club in Rio Grande du Sol. It is suggested that this be a "hands-on" project with 5-10 members traveling to Brazil to assist in the construction of a library. Currently, there isn't a library available for adults in their area and Germana and the Rotarians there would like to do something about that. Steve & Germana will provide more details as they become available, but for now if you are thinking this sounds interesting, update you inoculations and brush up on your Portuguese.
Attending a wedding for the first time, a little girl whispered to her mother, "Why is the bride dressed in white?" "Because white is the color of happiness, and today is the happiest day of her life," her mother tried to explain, keeping it simple. The child thought about this for a moment, then said, "So why's the groom wearing black?"
This year's raffle fundraiser will be held on March 11, 2015 at Galati's Hideaway located at 800 Feinberg Ct. In addition to the main event, the club will also be conducting side raffles. Club members are asked to consider putting together a basket for this purpose. If you are willing to provide a basket, please let Dave or Sue know. In addition, each member is asked to provide a six-pack of crafted beer and a bottle of wine that can be used in the "Wine/Beer" raffle. The club members will be gathering at 1:00p.m. on March 11 to setup for the evening. Please arrange to have your wine & beer at Galati's at that time.
The Rotary Club of Cary-Grove will be conducting a Winter Farmer's Market beginning Sunday, October 9th. The event will be held in-doors at the Algonquin Township offices located at 3702 U.S. Highway 14, Crystal Lake Illinois. The market will be located in building #6 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. on the first and third Sundays of the month.
