Clubrunner Maintenance Issues
We are having some formatting issues with our clubrunner banner. Excuse the appearance for the next week or so until I can figure this out.
Today's Guests
Today's guests were District Governor, Don Brewer and his wife Roseann.
Today's Winner
Today's winner was Linda, but I did not draw the black tee.  Side bets were donated back to the Rotary Foundation's Annual Fund.  Steve Cherveny reports that the pot is over $700.  Things are getting interesting ...
District Governor's Visit
The Rotary Club of Cary-Grove was honored to be visited by Rotary District 6440 Governor, Don Brewer and his wife, Roseann. Fellowship was enjoyed by all on Wednesday evening when Don and Roseann met with Board members at Jameson's Charhouse to review the goals and aspirations of the Club. Governor Don met with the entire Rotary membership at its regular weekly meeting on Thursday.

Don's message to the membership was to "focus on what you want for your communities. What can you do as a club to make Cary and Fox River Grove better communities." He shared a video entitled, "Seeing Red Cars" by Laura Goodrich.  The theme of the video was to get individuals to focus on what they want instead of what they don't want.  He also discussed the importance of having "our other" person to whom we can turn to for guidance and support. He referenced Dr. Henry Cloud's book, "The Power of the Other", and urged each member to find their "Other." He used the example of a three-legged stool to explain the stability each person needs to be successful in life. The first two legs represent your physical and emotional strengths. The third represents the fellowship. This includes friends and family, but also those that you can call upon to assist in your times of need.
Meeting & Venue Change November 16, 2017
The Rotary Club of Cary-Grove will not be meeting at the Park District in the morning on Thursday, November 16, 2017.

We will be having our "Evening Social" at (location to be determined) for now, save the date.  Since the date will be getting close to Thanksgiving you may already know that you are unable to attend.  If so, please let Chuck know as soon as possible.  It may help with his venue choices.  Thank you.
Christmas Party -December 21, 2017
For now, Save the date.  We are planning our annual Christmas Party for Thursday, December 21, 2017.  Place and time are being worked out.
Home of the Sparrow Donation
At its weekly meeting, the Rotary Club of Cary-Grove presented a check for $500 to The Home of the Sparrow. Making the presentation is club secretary, Sue Maifield. Receiving the check are HOS representatives Debiie McGraw and Michell Lussman. The donation will be used this winter for maintenance of the Fox River Grove Transitional house.
Friends of the Fox River Grove Library Book Sale
The Friends of the Fox River Grove Library will be holding its semi-annual book sale on November 3rd & 4th. You can drop off books you would like to contribute at the library between the dates of October 28th & November 2nd. End Polio Now Day
Rotary International has declared October 24th as "End Polio Now Day" and has asked local Rotary Clubs to help promote awareness of the significant advancements made toward the eradication of this disease over the past 30 years. A special thanks to Rotarians Dave Miller and Ted Wagner for placing "End Polio Now" awareness signs at their business locations. Dave has a billboard posted at the intersection of Jandus Road and Route 14, and Ted has information on his digital signs located at Stone Hill, Foxmoor & Cary Commons shopping centers.

November Board Meeting
The November board meeting will be held on Monday, November 6th. The meeting will begin at 6:30PM and will be held at Panera Bread in Fox River Grove. Let Pat know if you have something to be placed on the agenda.
Joke of the Week

A rich businessman is forced to charter a light aircraft to get to an appointment but is horrified at the cost of the flight. He gets on board with his wife and moans non-stop to the the pilot about the price of the charter. Eventually the pilot says, "Tell you what. If you can make it through the rest of the trip without opening you mouth I'll give you the flight for free, but if you can't, you have to pay double." The businessman agrees but the pilot decides to have some fun and starts looping the loop, going into spins, and indulging in all sorts of aerobatics. Despite this activity, the businessman keeps his mouth shut until the plane lands. The pilot congratulates him. "You beat me," he says. "I never thought you'd stay quiet through all of that." "Well, it wasn't easy," says the businessman. "Especially when my wife fell out."

End Polio Now Day

Below is an article from Rotary International's website:

Thanks to you, we are closer than ever to ending polio. In September, the World Health Organization removed Nigeria from the list of polio endemic countries after going a year without a reported case of the wild poliovirus. It has also been more than a year since the last case of the wild poliovirus anywhere on the African continent. Yet it’s no time to let up on our efforts. Keeping children protected from this virus and building on these achievements will require continued commitment and funding. And every dollar Rotary commits to polio eradication is matched 2 to 1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, tripling your impact.  Watch our World Polio Day Livestream update, and give to end polio.

Rotary Action & Fellowship Groups
One of President Steve's goals this year is to have at least one member join a Rotary Action Group or Rotary Fellowship Group.  As stated on RI's website, a Rotarian Action Group is an autonomous group of Rotarians, family members, program participants and alumni who are experts in a particular field, such as micro-credit or water and sanitation. More information about these groups and their purpose can be found on RI's website.

Rotary Fellowships are independent groups of Rotarians, family members, program participants and alumni who share a common passion. Being part of a fellowship is a fun way to make friends from around the world.  Again, more detailed information is available at this link to RI's website.

If you haven't all ready done so, take the time to click on the two links above and see if there may be a group that fits with your interests.  It's a great way to make new friends and to share common interests with Rotarians from around the world.

When we introduced Rotary Club Central in 2012, it revolutionized goal tracking and planning for clubs and districts — no more filling out paper club-planning forms or passing along boxes of historical club information every time a new leader took office. Rotary Club Central offered clubs and districts a quantifiable way to begin measuring local and global impact, specifically membership initiatives, service activities, and Rotary Foundation giving. But as with any technological advancement, in a few short years, Rotary Club Central began to show its age, and Rotarians took notice. They...

At its January 2017 meeting, the Rotary International Board of Directors adopted a new zone structure for Rotary clubs. Rotary bylaws require the Board to complete a comprehensive review of the 34 Rotary zones no less often than every eight years to ensure that each zone has an approximately equal number of Rotarians. The Board’s previous review of the zones occurred in 2008. The Board earlier approved the creation of three regional workgroups to develop rezoning proposals for Asia, Europe/Africa, and the Americas. These workgroups comprised one representative (either a current director,...

Through The Rotary Foundation, Rotary members have supported thousands of projects that promote peace, fight disease, provide clean water, save mothers and children, support education, and grow local economies. The Atlanta Host Organization Committee is offering some good old-fashioned Southern hospitality at the Rotary International Convention from 10 to 14 June. It has planned a wide range of activities featuring everything from good food and music to inspiring tours of local landmarks. If it’s your first convention, these events are chances to meet fellow Rotarians from around the world, and if you’re an experienced convention goer, you can catch up with old friends. Hall of Fame baseball player Hank Aaron will host Rotarians for a “Strike Out Polio” night at the new SunTrust Park, where you’ll...

When Teguest Yilma helped found the Rotary Club of Addis Ababa Entoto in 2002, she thought polio had already been eradicated from most of the world. But while Ethiopia had been free of the disease, Yilma was shocked to learn that new cases had started cropping up in surrounding countries such as Somalia. “I was thinking, it’s not possible, we can’t be free if the countries around us are not free,” she says. Yilma, the managing editor of Capital, Ethiopia’s largest English weekly newspaper, has brought a journalist’s skills to the fight against polio. She became vice chair of the Ethiopia...
