Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teenager shot in the head for speaking out against the Taliban in support of girls' education, has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2014.
Yousafzai, whose father is a Rotarian, shares the prize with Kailash Satyarthi, a native of India who has worked to combat the exploitation of children for financial gain, according to an announcement in October from the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

Business owners and community leaders in Evanston, Illinois, USA, joined Rotary staff and family members in a celebration of the organization's cultural diversity at an open-house Rotary Day event at Rotary's world headquarters on 25 October. Rotary President Gary C.K. Huang is urging clubs and districts to hold these informal events to showcase Rotary's good work. Today's guest were visiting Rotarian Alan Nerad (Lincolnshire) and Phil Stanko, Cary Park District. We also had Ashley, Gretchen, Michael, Maggie, Melanie & Keaton from our Interact group.
Alan Nerad from the Rotary Club of Lincolnshire, was the guest speaker today. Alan gave an overview of the International project that will provide wheel chairs to disabled children in Santa Rosa, Argentina. By using dollars collected from Rotary Clubs in District 6440, and through the use of matching grant money, Alan has been able to reach his goal of committing to 100 wheel chairs for this worthy cause.
In addition to the clubs locally that have agreed to join in this effort, the Rotary Club of Lincolnshire is partnering with the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa, Argentina, which will act as the host club for this adventure. That club will be responsible for taking the specific measurements for each chair so that they can be custom-fitted to the individual recipients. In addition, it will work with local custom officials to make the delivery process go as smoothly as possible. After the measurements are taken, they will be sent back to Alan's club for distribution to the manufacturer.
The goal of this joint venture is to provide custom-fit wheel chairs for children up to age fifteen. Because of the cost, these chairs are not available for many families who have no means of purchasing them due to the poor conditions in which they live. The chairs will be a blessing for children who suffer from disorders that limit their mobility. Through this International Outreach Program, more children will be able to attend school which will contribute greatly toward their quality of life and help in solving a tremendous social problem, including literacy and health attention.
The club membership will be gathering at "The Onion Pub" on Thursday, December 18th for its Holiday Meeting. The event will take place in the Cascade Room and will begin at 6:00pm. Cost for the evening will be $20 each. Please let Sandi know if you are planning on attending.
A professional football team had just finished their daily practice session when a large turkey came strutting onto the field. While the players gazed in amazement, the turkey walked up to head coach and demanded a tryout.
Everyone stared in silence as the turkey caught pass after pass and ran right through the defensive line. When the turkey returned to the sidelines, the coach shouted, "You're terrific!!! Sign up for the season, and I'll see to it that you get a huge bonus."
"Forget the bonus," the turkey said, "All I want to know is, does the season go past Thanksgiving Day?"

While eggs are commonly associated with breakfast and protein, many individuals aren't aware of the nutrient package the whole egg provides. Additionally, enjoying an egg a day can fall within current cholesterol guidelines. In fact, the American Heart Association includes one medium egg on its list of healthy foods for under $1, making eggs an inexpensive and delicious way for individuals to get these nutrients. According to Ashley, eggs contain thirteen essential vitamins and minerals, have about 70 calories each and only cost about 15 cents.

By giving the gift of gift cards, moms can purchase what she needs for her family: a small gift for her children and practical items that she would go normally go without. HOS embraces women to take control of their lives and be an active participant in buying that special gift for her child. This would never be possible without the gift of gift cards.

The Rotary Club of Cary-Grove will be conducting a Winter Farmer's Market beginning Sunday, October 9th. The event will be held in-doors at the Algonquin Township offices located at 3702 U.S. Highway 14, Crystal Lake Illinois.
