Guest Speaker - Paul Schifferer

Posted by Linda Trexler on Jul. 28, 2022
story thumbnail
This morning's guest speaker was a Classification Talk by member, Paul Schifferer. He shared with the membership his childhood growing up in a large family in South Elgin. Paul joined the National Guard in 1992. In '98 he was assigned as a Mortar Instructor with the Michigan Guard. He was deployed to both Kuwait & Iraq serving in the Infantry.

While working as a Bartender in the City at Rush & Division, he met his soon-to-be wife. While she didn't want to date him at the time, she now enjoys traveling with him on the many bike trips he participates in with a Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association which he joined in 2009. This organization holds rallies all around the world. One of Paul's favorites is the Memorial Day Rally held in Marseilles, IL.

Paul worked in the garage door industry for a period of time and eventually started his own business which he sold in 2019.  During this same timeframe, a fellow veteran convinced him to join Edward Jones. He currently partners with Rich Sansone who will be retiring in August. If you haven't had the chance yet, please take the time to know him a bit better.

Today's Guest Speaker

story thumbnail
This morning's guest speaker was Sarah Shah, wife of Rotarian Nimeet Shah. Sarah shared with the membership a number of options on how to increase our visibility through emails, Facebook, Instagram, etc. We should be able to link our Rotary Club with our Farmers Market, Corn Sales and "Friends of Rotary" so that our message can be made available on a wide-scale basis. She also mentioned the importance of using a detailed subject line to avoid the "Spam Trap". She stressed that with our upcoming "Brew Fest", it is important to begin advertising now. We were very appreciative of her taking the time to share her knowledge with the membership.

Disaster Relief Efforts

story thumbnail
Over the past several days we have been stunned by the devastation through a large area of the Midwest.  While the destruction and human toll is heart wrenching, I am inspired by the impulsive desire of Rotarians to provide support and comfort.

Many members of District 6440 are inquiring how we might best support efforts for recovery in the areas affected by this week's extraordinary weather event.  We have communicated with Rotary leadership in effected areas seeking guidance how you as individuals and/or clubs may help provide comfort and support.  In that spirit I am writing this email to inform you of several ways that you and your Rotary club can assist the individuals and communities who were impacted by these storms.

1.  For those who would like to donate through the District 6440 Charitable Fund we have activated an online donation portal.  https://form.jotform.com/62386028569971

The link to give to the ECF Relief Fund is here: https://edwardsvillecf.fcsuite.com/erp/donate/create?funit_id=1033

5. Additionally, many individual families in and near Edwardsville have established fundraising campaigns for their own funeral, medical, or housing expenses. Today's program was presented by our guest speaker, Vitaliy Bedrodnov of Rotary Children's Fund. Founded in 2003, RCF is part of a larger organization (Golden Gates) which is an International Culture Exchange program for young artists and musicians. The program recruits students from public schools and public art centers throughout the United States and Internationally, and offers them the ability to share their talents to audiences worldwide. In addition to traveling and sharing their talents and skills, students that are selected to participate are given the rare opportunity to be cultural ambassadors of their country and to learn more about the people of the countries they visit. As stated by Vitaliy, "The program has been building bridges across cultures through music and dance for more than a decade." The Golden Gates Project has been primarily self-sustaining along with funds provided through RCF. COVID-19 Connections

story thumbnail
Rotary District 6440 and The Coalition of Rotary Clubs of McHenry County are teaming with local Rotary Clubs to “get the word out” to friends, families and residents in their respective communities about COVID-19. The goal is to provide locations where individuals can get information about the virus and opportunities to enroll to receive notification when their Priority Group is eligible for scheduling an appointment to receive the vaccine. Information about the priority groups can be found on the Health Department for McHenry County’s website

Individuals are being encouraged to contact their doctor for advice about getting the vaccination. The Health Department stresses that it provides information about the virus, not recommendations. Other options for getting COVID-19 information and registering for the vaccine include hospitals; Northwestern MedicineMercy Health and Advocate Aurora Health as well as local pharmacies such as CVS and Walgreens.

In addition, the Coalition is encouraging individuals to consider volunteering to assist at one of the clinics that will be administering the shots. Four volunteers are needed for every medical person giving the vaccinations to help with registration, escorting patients and other logistical duties. Volunteer opportunities can be found on the Health Department of McHenry County’s website under the “Emergency Preparedness and Response” link. More information on the Medical Reserve Corps can be found at that location, as well as a Volunteer Application

Governor's Vibrant Club Challenge Award!

story thumbnail

This year, Rotary’s International President Mark Maloney has asked Clubs to Unite People, Take Action and strive for achievements that support Rotary’s strategic priorities. 2019/20 District 6440 Governor Suzanne Gibson’s Vibrant Club Challenge is aligned with these priorities and recognizes the work and commitment that clubs throughout the District have invested in connecting the world and becoming people of action.

Each year, local rotary clubs set new goals and objectives that align with those of their District and Rotary International. Activities are varied and are concentrated on Rotary's Five Avenues of Service; Club Service, Vocational Service, Community Service, International Service, and Youth Service. Yesterday, our President, Chuck Barrett, was notified that The Rotary Club of Cary-Grove has achieved this award.

Congratulations to Chuck for his leadership and direction of club activities during a difficult year as we and all rotary clubs dealt with the challenges presented by COVID-19.

Today's program was a presentation by Interact students Gracie Touhy and Jenna Styart. These two young ladies updated the membership on the many programs in which the Interact Club is involved. The most important one right now is their annual "Letters to Santa" program which is a huge undertaking. Club members present took letters to buy gifts for young children in the inner-city. If you were not present but would like to participate in the program, please contact either Pat or Cindy Finlon. They collected a few extra envelopes.

The dollar amount is between $30 and $35 each, and we were asked not to exceed this amount. If you would like to contribute more to this worthwhile effort, Direct Effect Charities (DEC) would be grateful for donations and instructions to do so are in the envelope with the student's "Letter to Santa".

"Letters to Santa" gifts need to be purchased, wrapped and labeled with your child's gift (tag is also inside the packet). The gifts need to be delivered to Cary-Grove High School by Thursday, December 12th. Thanks to all for stepping up and helping Interact achieve their goals.

True Value Paint

Posted by Joseph Trexler

Today's guest speakers were Jeffrey Maycan and Lori Feuerhelm from True Value Paint Manufacturing. Jeff is the Factory Director for their facility located here, in Cary. This 600,000 square foot building is the only paint manufacturing plant that True Value processes. The 135 employees working at this facility are responsible for producing and distributing paint to True Value's 4700 stores. Their efforts account for 4% of the company's total revenue, but 50% of its profit.

Depending on the type and color being produced, each batch of paint can have 7 to 20 different ingredients, all of which are warehoused on site. This makes it possible to provide over 1,000 Stock Keeping Units (SKU's) to meet the current demands of their customers and the ability to produce in excess of 50,000 gallons a day. In addition, as stated on True Value's Website, its EasyCare Ultra Premium Acrylic Latex paint has been certified as asthma and allergy friendly.

Department of Public Works Update

Posted by Joseph Trexler
story thumbnail
At today's meeting, Erik Morimoto, Director of Public Works, and Matt Anderson gave an overview of the Wastewater Treatment System for the Village of Cary. Matt described in detail the filtration process used by the village. Residents of Cary are fortunate in having the property, facility and expertise to ensure that our wastewater is efficiently processed in a cost-effective manner. And, the facility has the capacity to accommodate additional growth within the community without the need to upgrade equipment.

Erick reviewed some of the Construction Projects that are planned for the Village. At the top of that list is the upgrade to the Metro Station, a $2.3 million grant project that includes a new depot and pedestrian crossing at Route 14. Being the 60th busiest station out of Metra's 236 stations, this upgrade is much needed. Thanks to both Matt & Erik for a very informative program.

1st in the District

story thumbnail
We are grateful to Past District Governor, Don Brewer, for being on-hand this morning to proudly present the Rotary Club of Cary-Grove with three separate awards. The first most notable award was for being 1st in the District for Foundation Giving. Out of approximately 72 clubs in our District, being No. 1 is a significant accomplishment. The second award was The Rotary Citation (formerly the Presidential Citation). This award was given to the club for meeting specific goals outlined by the District at the beginning of the year. The third award was for our "End Polio Now" contribution which was in excess of $1,500. We may be a small club, but our leadership is experienced and committed. Congratulations to all our Members, our Board and President, Pat Finlon, for all their hard work. We are very proud of our members and our leadership.

Our guest speaker last week was Captain Andy Veath from the Cary Fire Protection District. Captain Veath updated the membership on current events and activities at the district. Founded over 100 years ago, the fire district is a separate entity from the Village of Cary. It provides protection for fire, rescue and life ambulance services to over 35,000 residents in the Cary area.

Community involvement is an important aspect at the district. Most notable are the Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) classes that are open to the public. Classes are held on the first Wednesday of the month but do require pre-registration, which can be done by visiting their website. The classes teach adult, child and infant CPR as well as techniques in choking incidents and how to use an Automatic External Defibrillation device. To learn more about the services offered by the Fire District, visit their website at www.http://caryfire.com.

Today's Program

The Rotary Club of Cary-Grove was honored today by a visit from District 6440's Governor, Julie Clark.  Julie's first official act of the morning was to recognize Phil Stanko as a new Paul Harris Fellow. She also awarded Paul Harris level advancements to Dave Miller and Joe Trexler.

Following up on last night's visit with the board, Julie updated the membership on changes being worked on at the District level to streamline the the grant process. The District is also working on a better way to showcase all that is going on in the district through the publication of a District News Letter. Julie also talked about the "Flexibility" factor and how that relates to individual clubs. Having a program that addresses flexibility in membership status and how that relates to the dues structure, can have a positive effect on the club's ability to attract & maintain members. Programs that offer options for spouse membership, satellite clubs and corporate-shared memberships can also add to the diversity of a club and attract individuals who might be interested in doing service projects as opposed to those that enjoy a more traditional role in service clubs.

Julie reflected on her turning point in getting really involved with Rotary. It all happened when someone asked if she would be interested in working on a committee. Getting involved at the committee level and working with others was a fun adventure for her, and being involved led to self-training and research as she sought out a better understanding of the types of programs offered by Rotary International. How fortunate for District 6440 that she took on the challenge of learning what Rotary has to offer.

Today's guest speaker was Karen Schultz, City Director, Refuge for Women Chicago. While their name implies Chicago, their organization works nationally and locally to assist adult women escape the cycle of sexual exploitation and trafficking. A Safe House Refuge for Women was established in McHenry County in 2006.

Karen explained how easily a young girl can be manipulated into doing things they wouldn't ordinarily do. Once begun, the trafficker's hold over them is too overwhelming for them to break away on their own, and their situation only gets worse.

Established in 2009 in Lexington, KY, Refuge for Women is a "non-profit, faith based organization providing specialized long-term care for women who have escaped human trafficking or sexual exploitation." Their goal is to help victims overcome addictions and reclaim their identities and build a brighter future.

Weiss Scholarship Foundation

Posted by Joe Trexler on Aug. 09, 2018

Our guest speaker at last week's meeting was Brett Weiss of the Weiss scholarship Foundation. Brett is a member of the Rotary Club of Naperville.  Since 2009, Brett has traveled six times to Kenya in pursuit of following his dream for combating poverty in the village of Dago. Most of his efforts have been directed toward improving the education level of the children that live there. Dago is a tiny community of 3,000 people with an average family income of less than $2 per day. In Kenyan, the average education is only four years. Only 20% of the children actually go to High School.

To combat this, Brett established The Weiss Scholarship Foundation in 2011. The goal of this foundation is to have a positive impact on all of the youth members in Dago and the Kenya area. By providing a guaranteed source of income for students to continue their education through High School, Brett's hope is that the economic & health conditions of the area will improve. Since the Foundation was started, 42 full four year scholarships have be issued. Eleven students have graduated from High School and four have gone on to University.

A full sponsorship for four years of High School is approximately $3,500. To learn more about The Weiss Scholarship Foundation and how you can help support it, visit their site at https://weissscholarshipfoundation.org.

Honduras Service Projects

Today's guest speaker was Dr. Jeff Johnson. He discussed some of the Rotary projects that are being planned in the Comayagua Valley area of Honduras. These projects are being offered by El Ayudante Missions Inc, a non-profit group committed to changing lives and transforming communities in the rural, agricultural areas of Honduras.

The projects differ in size and scope and focus on improving the quality of health, education and basic sanitation for the 15,000 people living in the area. One badly needed project includes providing a well for the campus of El Ayudante which houses a Medical & Dental Clinic and a Learning Center. Another would give financial support to purchase medicine for the Clinica El Ayudante, which has the only doctors withing a 25-mile radius. Water Storage basins for community homes is a third project. Due to limited water availability in the area, local communities only receive water through the piping system for about an hour per day. As a result, individual families need to have a storage basin that allows them to acquire enough water for daily functional needs.

Big Brothers Big Sisters provides this opportunity. It not only benefits the youth, but can provide the adult with a feeling of fulfillment knowing that they are making a difference in the life of an individual.

Through the generosity of several donors, they are in the process of moving into a new facility that is in need of some renovating. District Governor's Visit

Posted by Linda Trexler on Nov. 02, 2017
story thumbnail
The Rotary Club of Cary-Grove was honored to be visited by Rotary District 6440 Governor, Don Brewer and his wife, Roseann. Fellowship was enjoyed by all on Wednesday evening when Don and Roseann met with Board members at Jameson's Charhouse to review the goals and aspirations of the Club. Governor Don met with the entire Rotary membership at its regular weekly meeting on Thursday.

Don's message to the membership was to "focus on what you want for your communities. What can you do as a club to make Cary and Fox River Grove better communities." He shared a video entitled, "Seeing Red Cars" by Laura Goodrich.  The theme of the video was to get individuals to focus on what they want instead of what they don't want.  He also discussed the importance of having "our other" person to whom we can turn to for guidance and support. He referenced Dr. Henry Cloud's book, "The Power of the Other", and urged each member to find their "Other." He used the example of a three-legged stool to explain the stability each person needs to be successful in life. The first two legs represent your physical and emotional strengths. The third represents the fellowship. This includes friends and family, but also those that you can call upon to assist in your times of need.

Chris Moore - Classification Presentation

Posted by Linda Trexler on Jun. 01, 2017

Attendees at this morning's meeting were fortunate to hear a bit about our newest member, Chris Moore.  Chris grew up in the West Virginia Countryside where he loved racing go carts.  So much so, that he was good enough to compete out-of-state.

Upon completion of high school, Chris set off to college at West Virginia University Tech.  Following a path in Chemistry he moved on to the University of Virginia.  With the support of an encouraging woman, Michelle who he later married, he pursued a career in Environmental Chemistry and the effects of Mercury in the environment.  This path kept him moving around a great deal--Shenandoah National Park, Greenland, California, Alaska are just a few.

After focusing on Mercury in the environment, Chris changed his career to the effects of gasses in the Environment.  This change moved his family to Cary, Illinois where he now works as Senior Scientist for Gas Technology Institute in Des Plaines.  Please take the time to introduce yourself to Dr. Chris Moore.  Don't let that "Dr." title fool you.  He's a very down-to-earth fun person to be around.

Pam Losey, President and Founder of the Cary-Grove Historical Society, was the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Cary-Grove's meeting this morning. Pam discussed their newest project, which is to install a bronze bust of William Dennison Cary (founder of Cary) in the Jaycee Park located along Three-Oaks Road. The Historical Society is hoping to have the bust completed by early summer. William is one of the first settlers of the area, purchasing 80+ acres of land in 1841 for the lofty price of $1.25 per acre.

The bust is being sculptured by artist, Guy J Bellaver, who was also in attendance at this morning's meeting. The sculpture is being designed after a photo of Cary that was taken in the 1840 time-frame. Guy explained his process for creating the 1 1/2 time life-size bust as well as the process that will be used to convert the clay prototype into a bronze bust. He has fashioned numerous works in Pennsylvania, Geneva and St. Charles, IL. More information about his works can be found at his website http://bellaverstudios.com

Today's guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Cary-Grove was Jeremy Lessaris, CEO of Payment Brokers.  Jeremy is an entrepreneur that specializes in helping small to medium-sized businesses become more efficient.  Finding new ways to manage credit card processing is at the heart of what Payment Brokers does.   Their service includes shopping for the best credit rate available and monitoring the billing activity to insure the credit card company is maintaining its agreement.  Sounds simple, but for the average small business, it's a function that normally doesn't get addressed, and one that could be the cause of unnecessary expense.

Negotiating the Purchase of a Vehicle

story thumbnail
Our guest speaker today was Martin Konsor, a Financial Advisor and a member of the Rotary Club of Barrington Noon.  He shared a multiple of tips toward negotiationg the purchase of a vehicle whether it be new, used or leased.  Just a few things to consider are research the price, negotiate the price, take an extended test drive, consider purchasing out-of-state, avoid add-ons such as extended warranties or VIN etching, etc.  Know what vehicle you want and for what price.  Don't negotiate back and forth and be prepared to walk away "literally".  If you have any additional questions, you may call Martin at 847-571-2567.

Today's guest speaker was Barb Swanson from Habitat for Humanity.  Habitat was founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller.  According to their website, the concept of providing "partnership housing" centered on those in need of adequate shelter working side-by-side with volunteers to build decent, affordable houses. The houses would be built at no profit. New homeowners’ house payments would be combined with no-interest loans provided by supporters and money earned by fundraising to create “The Fund for Humanity,” which would then be used to build more homes.

End Polio Now Update

story thumbnail
This morning's members in attendance had the pleasure of listening to Carol Wells, District 6440 End Polio Now Chair.  Carol presented a brief history and update on the End Polio Now Campaign.  She reviewed the history of polio, highlighting Rotary International's partnering with the World Health Organization, UNICEF and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in 1988.  This newly formed partnership committed to eradicate Polio worldwide.  There are still a few remote areas in Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan experiencing outbreaks.  Political unrest and conflict in these areas make it difficult to deliver the much needed vaccine.

Our club's support toward this effort has continued to be generous.  Carol stressed that "Polio Eradication will be Rotary's Legacy to the World".  Thanks to all who continue to support the campaign--no matter how small.  We are very, very close to our goal.

District Governor, Rodney Adams, visited with Board members of the Rotary Club of Cary-Grove on Wednesday evening at the Onion Pub located at 22221 N Pepper Road, Lake Barrington.  The members that were present participated in a discussion of the strengths and challenges of the club as well as what they would like to accomplish over the next year.  On Thursday morning, he met with the entire membership and had the pleasure of installing new member, Erin Hauck.

In addition to installing the club's newest member, he discussed the progress that Rotarians world-wide are making toward the eradication of polio.  This effort began as a pilot project in the Philippines back in 1979.  Since 1985, the eradication of polio has been Rotary's flagship project.  At that time, polio paralyzed more than 350,000 children per year in 125 countries, more than 1,000 per day.  Since then, the number of polio cases has been reduced by 99.9%, with less than 50 cases being reported in the two remaining countries of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Governor Adams encouraged all present to participate in an update report highlighting the progress against polio that will take place on Friday, October 23rd.  That event will be streamed live at 6:30 PM EDT.  In addition to Rotarians, he expressed gratitude to the partnering organizations that are helping to make this possible; the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Rotary's Future Vision

Today's program was presented by Rotarian Sandy Morgenstein.  He spoke on the topic of "Rotary's Future Vision", highlighting some of the changes that will take place beginning July of 2013 with the Matching Grant Program.

The new Grants Program will have six areas of of focus; Peace & conflict prevention/resolution, Disease prevention & treatment, Water and sanitation, Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy and Economic & community development.  For Rotary Clubs to qualify for a grant, the project being considered must fall into one of these categories and must have a minimum investment of $30,000.  In addition, the long-range plan for the project must be sustainable.

Rotary International is hopeful that Future Vision will streamline the grants application process and will have a greater impact in the areas of focus due to larger resources being committed.  To learn more about the matching grants program, visit Rotary International.
