Last week the Community Grants Committee gave out two grants to two very worthy organizations. One was to the Special Leisure Services Foundation to help fund their new Snoezelen Sensory Room! Imagine a room where a child with Autism can feel safe, or a teenager with Asperger’s can relax his mind through a multi-sensory experience, or an adult with Down syndrome can feel in control and make choices independently. “Snoezelen” sensory room is now the first of its kind implemented into a recreational facility in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. The other grant was given to our local CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) who are trained volunteers who, under the direction of local emergency responders, help provide critical support by giving immediate assistance to victims, providing damage assessment information, and organizing other volunteers at a disaster site. Volunteers trained in CERT also offer a potential workforce for performing duties such as shelter support, crowd control, and evacuation. Thank you to both agencies for all that they do for the community!
