The Buffalo Grove Rotary Club recently dedicated a Little Free Library in Green Lake Park to the memory of Patrice (Pat) Johannes, who passed away in the spring of 2021. Pat was a valued club member who had a successful career in education, including being a principal at Buffalo Grove and St. Viator High schools. A champion for literacy projects, Pat was the devoted chair of the Buffalo Grove Rotary scholarship program for several years and was instrumental in the awarding of more than $20,000 in scholarships for college-bound seniors from Buffalo Grove and Stevenson high schools.
After the dedication ceremony, which was attended by Buffalo Grove Rotary President Brett Robinson and nearly a dozen Rotarians, they, along with members of the Buffalo Grove Garden Club, Buffalo Grove Lions Club, the Environmental Club from Buffalo Grove High School, the Buffalo Grove Environmental Action Team, and neighbors of the park combined efforts to install 240 plants, mostly trees and shrubs, for a new arboretum at Green Lake Park.
Area residents are invited to visit the Little Free Library to take a book, and leave a book for others to enjoy. Little Free Library is a 501 nonprofit organization that promotes neighborhood book exchanges, with a mission to inspire readers and increase access to books. The organization works to achieve their mission through a global network of Little Free Libraries that are led completely by volunteers.
Mark your calendar to volunteer on Thursday, October 21st at 5:30 pm for the Bowling with Buddies event at Bowlero in Buffalo Grove. See Bo about this event.

Why cut down on road salt?
According to the Northwest Water Planning Alliance, most of the road salt (sodium chloride) or other chemicals that are applied to melt ice and snow, either in solid or liquid form, ends up contaminating our streams, lakes, and groundwater. Once road salt is dissolved, there is no practical way to remove the chlorides from water resources.
It harms native wildlife and plants. It can be toxic to aquatic wildlife, such as fish, amphibians, and aquatic invertebrates at high levels. Excessive sodium in soils can stunt plant growth, damage vegetation, or kill plants. Salt-tolerant, invasive plant species often replace vulnerable native plants, leading to a decrease in native plant diversity.
It damages our infrastructure. Chloride is a major corrosive agent, especially of steel reinforcement in concrete. It can also accelerate corrosion to metal pipes, structures, and vehicles. The damage to roads and bridges due to deicing salts has been estimated to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars per year
(Transportation Research Board, 1991, Highway de-Icing: Comparing Salt and Calcium Magnesium Acetate: National Research Council Special Report 235, Washington, DC, 158 p.).
Attend the Salt Smart Collaborative De-Icing workshop and do your part for the environment and for your customers and members. Register.
