Last week we met two of our three recipients of the Pat Johannes Service Above Self Scholarships and heard about their service during high school, met their parents, and learned what their future plans are for college.  Vivi Sankar is a Stevenson High School graduate who will be attending University of Pennsylvania in the fall and wants to combine her interests in biochemistry and computer science.  Ellie Askew is a Buffalo Grove High School graduate who will be attending University of Miami where she aspires to double major in biology and Spanish and eventually pursue a medical degree.  Both of these students were very impressive academically, in their commitment to helping others, and in their achievements during their high school years.  They both stated they intend to continue their commitment to service in the future and expressed thanks to our Rotary Club for the financial assistance and recognition.  Thank you to the Scholarship Committee who had the difficult task of choosing the recipients from the many worthy candidates.  Our other recipient is out of the country and we will meet her via Zoom soon.

     

  

 

On Monday evening at the Village Board Meeting, Past President Brett presented Kevin Gatto with our Rotary Firefighter of the Year Award, an award given to those who display a strong work ethic, values, integrity and commitment to the residents of Buffalo Grove and the Fire Department.  Kevin first joined the BG Fire Department in 1993 and his work ethic is a positive example for others.  He is quick to lend a helping hand whenever the need arises.  Any time Kevin mentors new firefighters or fire apparatus engineers, he shares his knowledge and experience with an open mind and jovial attitude.  During the difficult pandemic years, Kevin stepped up to serve as an Acting Lieutenant without hesitation.  In recognition of this award, we will donate $250 in Kevin's name to the Rotary International Foundation and $250 to Project Fire Buddies, Kevin's choice of charity.  Pictured below is Fire Chief Mike Baker, FF/PM Gatto and Past President Brett.
