President’s Message

Week of April 9

A great suggestion by a member of ours to help with the increasing state of loneliness among many these days - invite someone you, a family member or a friend may know of who is struggling with this to one of our meetings! All you have to do is forward the invite to them or have Segun send them their own invite – simple!

We’ve all heard by now of Zoom meetings being hacked into (“Zoombombing”), so as a safeguard we will not have the link on the Club Bulletin or on the website. Also, you’ll be asked to enter the password that’s on the Email invite you receive.

April Board Meeting Key Points
Club Secretary Pat will:
- compile a list of our members who haven’t yet joined in on a virtual Club meeting for us to call them.
- create a Call List of members, past members, Rotary Corps, etc. to launch a call tag team to keep in touch.

We should consider :
- who in our community may  have lost their jobs due to Shelter in Place & how can we help;
- calls to members about help or support they may need;
- scheduling “food drop off and chat” for people by themselves.

Pat will write up Grant Statement confirming our commitment to “(BSR) Rotary Multi-Club Collaboration” (not yet paid) of $2,000 to BlueStar Recycling.

Club Treasurer Todd Sholeen will be writing letters and checks on behalf of deceased former Club member Charles Milett, to the McHenry Habitat for Humanity and to The Rotary Foundation for $500 each.  These are two entities identified by Charles’ family for remembrances.

We will reconsider the criteria of earning a Paul Harris Fellow award other than receiving Club points come Maria’s term in July 2020.  In the meantime, we will investigate what other clubs do with their Paul Harris Points.

KidFest is canceled.

At the next Board meeting each committee is asked to make a report on unspent budget money.

Speaker Presentation:

Bill Kelley from the Schaumburg/Hoffman Estates Rotary Club introduced Jean Schlinkmann who administers the Advancing Community Economics (ACE) grant program in collaboration with Harper College.  The current program has proven extremely successful and is lauded by Harper and the District for its unique “inbound” investment in education to serve our local communities.

ACE is one of only 60 Rotary Global Grants.  The requirements for a Global Grant include:

- Service to an under/ unemployed population

- Supply of labor for a shortage in local businesses’ employment

- Local/ community college certificate program availability

ACE provides:

- Full tuition

- Fee coverage

- Some books coverage

The program began with a significant endowment from a Schaumburg/ Hoffman Estates Rotary member five years ago under the name of “Fishing Well – Teach a Man to Fish.”  Subsequently, the ACE 80K grant included donations from other organizations: 13K Taiwan Rotary, 1K Pakistan Rotary, 32K other local Rotaries /DDF with a 34K District match.

Currently applicants are referred to the ACE program.  Eligibility requires 1) 24 years of age or older, 2) residency in the Harper District area, 3) proven financial need, 4) references.  There have been 21 students to date with 7 graduates.  This represents multiple areas of study: healthcare, manufacturing, administration, law, etc.

Unique to the program is the availability of mentors for every two students.  In cooperation with the non-profit Partners for Our Communities (POC) that manages the mentoring program, ACE is able to provide extracurricular support for interested students as they navigate through their educational experiences.  Four of these mentors have been BBRC members or friends of: Trudy Wehren, Trudy’s friend Teresa, Kris Young and Mark Gibson.

The success of this program is evaluated through a series (3) of surveys taken by the students: one as an early baseline establishing work status, financial circumstances, family situations, etc.; a second post-graduation asking for similar data for comparison purposes; third a one year later survey of progress/ improvement in the same areas.

The Rotary Foundation has conducted an audit of the ACE program and been very complimentary of the plan.  Additionally, Rotary International has been excited by the success of this inbound grant program.  Needless to say, Harper College is extremely pleased as well.

This grant expires at the end of 2020.  The Schaumburg/Hoffman Estates Rotary is hoping to again partner with Taiwan and other local Rotaries to resubmit for another grant starting in 2021.  The documentation for a new grant is being drafted and will be available for potential Rotary partners to review.  Taiwan plans to pledge 28K for an ACE II program.  It would be wonderful if each Club could donate 5K (Arlington Heights example).  Remembering all local club donations will be doubled/ matched.

As an incentive, it is possible Harper would provide Rotary with “naming” or logo rights on one of their buildings if $1M could be granted in total.

At the close of the presentation, Eric Lin suggested the same presentation be made via Zoom to the Taiwan Club.  As next year’s (2021) international conference is in Taiwan, the collaboration that might be demonstrated by future support for this program could be featured on the conference agenda.

Eric and others also started to brainstorm on ideas that might engage our local Korean community, or might follow up on the After School Program and Early Dementia Detection plans that were introduced in Taiwan.  Eric, Bill and Jean will follow up on several of these items.

Brag Bucks/ Announcements:

Pat Hogan offered some good news: Monday, March 30 was Doctors’ Day.  The Advocate Good Shepherd staff was presented with 400 Doctors’ Day Donuts provided by a local bakery and individually sealed/wrapped by three bakery workers that were called back to their jobs.

Maria Peterson has located one N95 mask she can donate.  Pat Hogan will pick up the mask and get it to someone at Advocate Good Shepherd.

Virginia Menzimer indicated she has volunteered to do potential patient triaging from home to help sort out people that NEED to present to ER, versus be redirected to a Tele-Doc, pharmacist, or primary provider.

Todd Sholeen shared that the Barrington Police Department’s Facebook page showed a police “drive by” in celebration of a little guy's 5th birthday.

Suzanne Gibson thanked Kris Young for providing VMC training as everyone gears up for Zoom meetings.

Steve Hollis indicated he was awaiting protocols from Rotary re: the prevention of hacking into Zoom calls.

Terry Cullum thanked Segun Ajayi for his technical support.

Eric Lin closed with another “thank you” to the Schaumburg/ Hoffman Estates Rotary for their partnership efforts, and with news that a supplier of an aerosol box to help with intubation has been identified. (Eric and Lew Parks were trying to design something similar.)

Final Announcements/Reminders:

Jeanne Hanson thought this meeting was very inspiring.  She acknowledged we are all going through a tough time, and reminded everyone that there is “telecounseling” available for anyone – students, parents, singles.  She would be glad to direct anyone or provide a list/ website of services.  People may also go to: http://bstrongtogether.org/

In closing, a brief discussion of the viability of standard and/or homemade masks took place.  In summary:
the standard/ homemade mask CAN’T HURT, BUT IT WILL NOT PREVENT THE EXPOSURE to the virus as it does not securely cover the nose/ mouth; does nothing for the eyes; and, is compromised the minute it is touched by hands/gloves that may have picked up any virus residue.  A mask CAN help prevent someone from spreading the virus to another person, this and Social Distancing/ Sheltering in Place is the best we all can do for ourselves and others.
