Greetings Fellow Rotarians,

This week brings us a classification talk from our own Todd Sholeen.  What will we discover that we did not know?!

Also, I will provide a further brief review regarding our new Zone as of 2019. North America lost 2 zones which represents the loss of one RI Director from North America with the gain going to Asia. Next year's Zone for us will be in Kansas City. Consider attending a Zone conference and/ or International convention in your journey to becoming a Rotarian.

This week brings us a wonderful family- friendly event with BACT at their Far Field property Oct. 13th,  1-3PM. Come prepared to assist with tree planting and enjoy and see where we planted trees for and with them last year. Wear your Rotary colors as we will likely receive recognition for our supporting the equipment grant they acquired for that conservancy.

CFC continues with work days each Thursday and Saturday AM plus their special Fall project of seed collection on the weekends. Assemble at their farmhouse directly across the street from the hospital. See their website for details. https://citizensforconservation.org/

Thanks to Lew and Mike for planning a fellowship event apparently sabotaged by the weather. Suzanne and I were visiting our grandchildren, so we missed all the excitement. And thanks to Steve Hollis for representing our club at the Library volunteer displays this past Sunday.

Please do say yes and participate in volunteer activities and take pride in your Club including joining us at our 30th anniversary on Oct. 16th. Please do say yes to Trudy and Brett in the preparations for that evening. And please do confirm with Steve Hollis this week regarding your participation as a head count is needed by Francesca's.

Respectfully Yours in Rotary.

Mark, Suzanne and Narayan attended the Zone Meeting last week and will be summarizing the highlights for our club over the next few meetings.

Mark also reminded the members of the LOA and Membership updates proposed by the Membership Committee as part of the By Laws review.  This information has been forwarded to all members.  A member vote will take place at next week’s meeting.

Joe Dorociak again invited everyone to join him at his home for an evening of folk music featuring the duo Adler and Hearne.
Details: October 19, 7PM, BYOB, Donation of $15 appreciated.
714 Beacon Drive, Barrington Harbor, Lake Barrington

Trudy Wehren encouraged everyone to come out for a Jam Session with our own “Smokin’ Joe” at Red’s Steakhouse, Richmond, Sunday, October 28, 2-6PM.  Food is available.  A sign up sheet was circulated during the meeting.

Mike Martinez announced a Foundation Alumni event at RI on October 13, 5:30-7:45PM.

Suzanne Gibson reminded everyone of the local End Polio event being co-sponsored with the Barrington Fitness Center.  The event will be an indoor bike ride with Rotary and Fitness Center members riding and/or sponsoring riders to contribute to the End Polio campaign.  This is Barrington’s first time mirroring an ongoing sponsored ride conducted by the Tucson Rotary Clubs.

Suzanne also spoke to the exceptional experience and training received at the Zone Meeting she attended.  She praised the investment the RI makes in developing future leaders.  Mark Maloney the RI President Elect spoke about the 2019 forward vision for Rotary; other speakers proved equally inspiring.  And, as is often the case, the participants reconnected with Rotary partners they have worked with in the past.

Maria Peterson further endorsed the BACT Oaktoberfest event, complimenting the efforts of the organization and highlighting the opportunity to get some exercise and enjoy nature.

Speaker: Omar Martinez, Exec.Ofcr., USN, Great Lakes

Exec. Officer Omar Martinez provided some background on his career in the Navy, acknowledging the leaders and mentors that guided him along the way.  He is currently responsible for the safe and secure operation of the Great Lakes Naval Base, including the property and personnel.

Great Lakes is the enlisted boot camp for every future sailor in the US Navy.  Rear Admiral Bernacchi is the only Midwest Navy Admiral with this command.  This also includes the first and only combined VA center and hospital on campus.   The Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC) is a first-of-its-kind partnership between the U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense (DoD), integrating all medical care into a federal health care facility with a single combined VA and Navy mission.

Boot camp lasts eight weeks with approximately 90% of the recruits completing the course.  Great Lakes is increasing the number of graduates from 40K to 50K per year to meet the demands of peace keeping and securing the sea lanes for commerce.

Recent sea collisions require enhanced “hands on” training of seamen and vigilance of other country’s naval habits.

Great Lakes has been called upon to help with Lake Michigan incidents, but this is a rarity.

Ex. O. Martinez opened a vigorous Q&A session where he addressed the many questions coming from the audience.  One issue in particular, the possibility of partnering with the Base regarding vocational training and scholarships, was intriguing.

Brag Bucks:

- Charles Millett highlighted his upcoming cruise up the Snake River with the salmon run.

- Suzanne Gibson and Elizabeth McGrath wanted to thank Roy Mason for opening the Edward Jones leadership forum to them where they heard from the Managing Partner, Penny Pennington.

- Gillett Johnson was looking forward to a New Orleans trip with his wife in celebration of her birthday.

- Keith Hanson congratulated his son Gavin who is now a journalist in D.C. assigned coverage of cyber crime and incidents in the South China Sea.

- Brett Schulz acknowledged the value of naval training and experience as his wife’s cousin most recently got her dream job at Disney because of her background and experience with the Navy and OSHA.

Fun and Frolic:

Mark again challenged the group with a Rotarian quiz………we failed miserably!

Raffle:

- Mark Gibson won the $10 raffle

- Pat Hogan pulled the elusive white marble and walked away $499 richer!!

Next Meeting:
