February is here! I always count five months of brutal winter weather in Chicago—November through March. Now there are only two left! Here’s hoping for an early spring.
Our Club Service group has planned a fun event—Vinyl Night for this Saturday, February 4 at Kris Young’s home. I hope you will attend—the event promises great food, laughs and of course wonderful music.
We will be inducting Gillett Johnson into the Club on Thursday morning. His classification is “humble winemaker” so make sure to ask Gillett about his interesting background and former Rotary experience.
Also on Thursday, Carol Wells will be speaking about Polio Eradication. Please check the Duty Roster to see if you have any assigned tasks.
Club Member Dr. Rose Grace spoke to us on the subject of Sleep Disorder.
At one time or another we have all experienced some sleep deprivation. Lack of enough sleep can be caused by many things: worry, anxiety, fears, repeated thoughts, as well as our hurried society and electronics. The latest research brings us information on sleep patterns: how much we need, and how to change our sleep patterns if necessary. Dr. Grace presented information about the factors that influence our sleep patterns, such as: circadian rhythms, genetics, anxiety, our thoughts and several more. She presented us with a guide to follow if you are looking to change your sleep patterns.

In incoming RI President announces his theme for the coming year. It is shown below:
At this meeting, there was a speech by our good friend RI Director Jorge Aufranc from Guatemala. He talked about the importance of doing good in the developing countries. In particular, he addressed two specific themes"
1. Why we do what we do?
2. Importance of Impact, Outcome or Results
His speech is very touching to me. He specifically talked about two projects from within District 6440 - X-Ray project and the Mechanical Cow project.
I strongly recommend that you watch the 15 minute video at the following link:
An e-mail from Brain Finn with the BHS Interact Club.
Hello all,
My name is Brian Finn and I am a sophomore at Barrington, and obviously a part of Interact. So, we started this idea for the RandomActs of Kindness Project when Trudy mentioned it and it sparked some ideas around the room at the Interact meeting.
Some of our original ideas that we plan to still do are:
-Handing out candy in the mornings to people before school
-Passing around little sayings such as "You have a nice shirt on today, please pass this card onto someone else with a nice shirt."
-Giving inspirational/kindness quotes to the different departments so the teachers within that department can write one on their board and talk about it for a minute or two of class
-Printing out a few reviews for every teacher from online and delivering them to the teachers
-Bringing in random food items (things like a box of donuts, fruit basket, etc.) to the other departments (counseling, administration, nurses, etc.)
-Overall just promoting the ideas of kindness with no reward throughout the school
We are looking to do this on Feb. 16, although I know your idea was Feb. 17, we have no school that day, so in order for it to be done around then, we moved it to the 16th for BHS. We are all very excited to get the rest of Interact involved with this project. Although it may be small, I believe it will be one of the most rewarding projects because how often do we do projects that directly affect our school, getting to see the impact right away?
That is where we're at as of now, we are still open to any new ideas and any tips or anything you have for us! Let me know if you have any further questions as well and I would be happy to answer them!
I want to introduce you to Mary Holcomb from the Breakfast Club on this email. Mary focuses on helping the impoverished both locally and internationally in her service work.
Mary is leading the Random Acts of Kindness for our club and is able to help and collaborate to enhance this Interact project. This might justify additional club funding and the opportunity for publicity. We always talk about the benefits of cooperation and integration between Interact and Rotary and I should have formally brought Mary into the conversation earlier. I think she will be a great partner to you both.
Please reach out to Mary with an update. It will be good to see how things develop from there.
Thanks!
Note: The e-mail exchange continued
But suffice it to say, the Barrington Breakfast Rotary Club will help provide some funding support to Barrington High School's Interact Club. The BHS Interact Clubs efforts to participate in the Random Acts of Kindness initiative is greatly appreciated.
