Greetings Fellow Rotarians,

This week we will hear from Patty Barten regarding CFC. She will update us on their current initiatives, future plans, and in what ways we can best partner with them.
As you know, they manage multiple conservancies and this month are collecting seeds on Sunday afternoon. See their website for full details as they have work days also on Thursday and Saturday mornings.

The tickets are now closed for the local chapter Lyric event.  Thank you members who will be attending, and thank you Randall and Connie for your sponsorship. The performers, in a small space, create an amazing experience. Plus, we will be creating increased visibility for the Lyric and ourselves - beneficial to all concerned!
Art in the Barn will be this weekend also.  Contact Pat Hogan to both support our club and her Auxiliary leadership at Advocate Good Shepherd
The Palatine Oktoberfest enjoyed terrific weather and thank you to all the club members who attended and some who also volunteered.  Mutual support is a great additional avenue of service within Rotary.
Please continue to check the District website and calendar and our own website for ongoing events and opportunities.

Respectfully Yours in Rotary,
   Mark S. Gibson

Announcements

Mark Gibson reviewed the list of upcoming events and reminded us that a BBRC group will be going to the Palatine Rotary Oktoberfest this weekend.

He also highlighted hands on volunteer opportunities in the club. Members are being recruited to participate in the “Home Team” home maintenance group that will be helping seniors with simple chores around the house.

The Barrington Conservation Trust will have a work day on 10/13 to clear buckthorn.  CFC has work days on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday in the Fall to do seed collection.

ADDITIONAL ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Trudy Wehren reported that there would be a Club fellowship activity the last Sunday in October – 10/28, from 2 to 4pm.  Joe Dorociak will be performing that Sunday afternoon at Red’s Steak and Barbecue in Richmond.

Susie Whipple invited everyone to join her at Heinen’s tomorrow. She will be pouring Spanish wines from 4:30 until 7:30pm.

Dave Waring invited everyone to attend the Elgin Symphony opening night concerts. Saturday, September 15, is Barrington night. Chrissie Mena will be playing the cymbals. Dave will have his turn on Sunday.

Mark reminded us all to pick up our 30th anniversary Rotary bags.

We received a thank you note from Sunny Hill School thanking us for our donation to support 5th graders college visits.

SPEAKER: TALEI THOMPSON, Coach, Teacher & Speaker

Talei Thompson was our speaker for the day. He is a member of the Maywood Proviso Rotary Club. They have more than doubled their membership over an 18 month period, from 22 to 48 members. Two of their members do not live in their community, but are virtual members who attend via live streaming.
He shared some of his thoughts on how to revitalize and grow Rotary at a local level.
  1. Have remarkable speakers and programs. He gave some examples of dynamic speakers they have had.
  2. Use live streaming. He heard an incredible District Governors presentation by a Rotarian who is out of state. He was able to use Zoom to have the person present to his club.
  3. Consider holding evening meetings. His club has an evening meeting once a month on Friday at the TGIF in Oak Park.
  4. Use the law of explosive growth. A concept he learned from Dr. John Maxwell. Strategically recruit a leader of influence. If a person truly has influence after learning about Rotary, they will share with others they know and encourage them to attend and join. If they invite 7 people, maybe 4 will join.
He then shared a story about his grandmother and how she taught him the importance of character and hard work. These are essential characteristics of a strong leader.

Elizabeth McGrath encourage us to get a Rotary decal that we can place on the rear window of our cars to raise awareness of Rotary.

Louis agreed that we want really good, dynamic programs, but sometimes it is hard to get good speakers to attend a 7am meeting.

BRAG BUCKS

Debbie Villers asked that we all send prayers to the people living in North Carolina in the path of the Hurricane. She has an Aunt, Uncle and cousins that are being affected.

Edward Jones will be holding a special event for women on October 2 from 5:30 to 8:30pm. Their new CEO will be speaking along with Sally Blount, Dean of the Kellogg School of Business.

Brett Schulze is the new Financial Chair for the District.

For those who are height challenged, Elizabeth brought a stool with a rotary symbol on it. She also had a football jersey with the number 69 on it and wondered who the player was. The group determined it was probably Jared Allen.

Keith Hanson reported that his brother is a Rotarian and was involved with the Fred Hampton case years ago.

Susie Wong expressed how grateful she was to be able to attend our meeting today.

FUN AND FROLIC

Bruce Grabenkort asked what retired TV broadcaster served as the voice of a Looney Tunes character. The answer was Walter Jacobson.

RAFFLE

Steve Hollis won the $10. Suzanne Gibson gave it a good try, but didn’t get the white marble.

NEXT MEETING

The next meeting is on Thursday September 20, 2018,
7 am at the Performing Arts Center, Garlands.
