SPEAKER: TALEI THOMPSON, Coach, Teacher & Speaker
Talei Thompson was our speaker for the day. He is a member of the Maywood Proviso Rotary Club. They have more than doubled their membership over an 18 month period, from 22 to 48 members. Two of their members do not live in their community, but are virtual members who attend via live streaming.
He shared some of his thoughts on how to revitalize and grow Rotary at a local level.
- Have remarkable speakers and programs. He gave some examples of dynamic speakers they have had.
- Use live streaming. He heard an incredible District Governors presentation by a Rotarian who is out of state. He was able to use Zoom to have the person present to his club.
- Consider holding evening meetings. His club has an evening meeting once a month on Friday at the TGIF in Oak Park.
- Use the law of explosive growth. A concept he learned from Dr. John Maxwell. Strategically recruit a leader of influence. If a person truly has influence after learning about Rotary, they will share with others they know and encourage them to attend and join. If they invite 7 people, maybe 4 will join.
He then shared a story about his grandmother and how she taught him the importance of character and hard work. These are essential characteristics of a strong leader.
Elizabeth McGrath encourage us to get a Rotary decal that we can place on the rear window of our cars to raise awareness of Rotary.
Louis agreed that we want really good, dynamic programs, but sometimes it is hard to get good speakers to attend a 7am meeting.
BRAG BUCKS
Debbie Villers asked that we all send prayers to the people living in North Carolina in the path of the Hurricane. She has an Aunt, Uncle and cousins that are being affected.
Edward Jones will be holding a special event for women on October 2 from 5:30 to 8:30pm. Their new CEO will be speaking along with Sally Blount, Dean of the Kellogg School of Business.
Brett Schulze is the new Financial Chair for the District.
For those who are height challenged, Elizabeth brought a stool with a rotary symbol on it. She also had a football jersey with the number 69 on it and wondered who the player was. The group determined it was probably Jared Allen.
Keith Hanson reported that his brother is a Rotarian and was involved with the Fred Hampton case years ago.
Susie Wong expressed how grateful she was to be able to attend our meeting today.
