SPEAKER: KYLE KICK, EXEC. DIR., BSTRONG TOGETHER
Our speaker was Kyle Kick, from BStrong Together, which is a nonprofit in a coalition organization made up of community groups, educational entities, healthcare organizations and community members that work together to coordinate and plan programs and services throughout the Barrington area. Their mission is that of enhancing the health and well-being of our community’s children and youth in mind, body and spirit. In 2017, three organizations merged that were all working to help youth. One was Barrington LEADS which was present for 10 years in Barrington. The other was LINK BARRINGTON which was a resource group with coffees for parents and speakers. The third organization was HERE BARRINGTON which was formed after several suicides in 2007-2008, and this was a group of mental health and faith based leaders who organized to work on suicide prevention.
Be Strong services areas within District 220 boundaries, although all are welcome. Programming is free and any family can participate in programs. BStrong provides parent coffees and discussion groups, conversation circles which are funded by BACF and an expert speaker series on topics relevant to families. This weekend, Sept. 9 is the Joe Kelsch Memorial Run/Walk/Family Fest from 8-10-30 am at Citizens Park. There will be music and activities for young children.
The Barrington Committed program is a program to promote a healthy lifestyle for children. It stresses adequate sleep, healthy nutrition, drug/alcohol free behavior and regular exercise. This program began at the high school and started with athletes, then moved to the rest of the school. The program is now in the Middle Schools. A carabiner is provided with healthy messages and many children attach this to their backpacks. They also have BC Bashes in the Fall and Spring for Middle Schoolers.
There is a Community Crisis Response Team, composed of mental health professionals and faith leaders. This team can mobilize in a crisis. The organization is associated with Broncos Committed and Erika’s Lighthouse, which is a support group out of Evanston for depression and suicide prevention.
There are eight parent coffees throughout the year on topics such as academic stress, interpersonal violence prevention, social hosting laws and underage drinking, stress management and mindfulness.
The Broncos Committed program provides programs to 650 children in 6th grade.
The organization had 3,896 volunteer hours logged last year and 682 hours of volunteers from high school students. There are 23 Board members and an association with 13 community organizations.
At the end of September there will be a school district focus on school safety, and there will be a coffee on September 26 from 9:30-11 am at the library through BStrong on this topic.
The movie “Screenagers” will be shown on Oct 9, 7-8:30 pm, with a free panel discussion at BMS Prairie School.
The speaker Devorah Heltner who wrote “Screenwise” on raising children in the digital age will speak on Oct. 30, 7-8:30 pm, at Prairie.
Additionally, there are also programs at Sunny Hill School; mailings to families; a Time 2 Talk Campaign, to get families to talk often about various issues. In the Fall, there is the Drug/Alcohol free information. In the Winter, there is the Healthy relationship session which discusses interpersonal reactions. In the Spring the session is on stress management, anxiety, depression and suicide prevention. Information is placed on the BStrong website and Facebook. There is also a calendar of BStrong events plus other mental health community events, such as NAMI.
In summary, it is important to build connections for kids so that they have healthy connections to parents, students, school and the community. There is a need to build skills from birth on to give students inner strength and the ability to form relationships.
