President’s Message
Week of January 16

At last week’s meeting towards the end of the Paul Harris Fellow and pin ceremony, in Kris’s concluding remarks, she stated “Basically, giving to The Rotary Foundation’s educational and humanitarian programs . . . it’s a big commitment and it betters the lives of people around the world . . . people you’ve never met…” – this bolstered my fundraising efforts for our Club, and for Rotary - (quoting Ibrahim La’ah) “…the most powerful humanitarian non-profit organization in the world”!

This week’s Guest Speaker:
Sharmila Wijeyakumar “Rahab’s Daughters” -Fighting human trafficking

Fundraising Committee
We will be sitting at our Rendezvous Team tables this week. Who’s my team leader? The name is on the manila envelope you were handed last week!

Youth Service committee / Student Exchange Dept.
Susie shared:
“We will be sponsoring our 2nd Short-Term Exchange student this summer.  Our goal is to sponsor a Long-Term student in the near future. To accomplish this, we must find awesome host families in the Barrington area.” Susie had met someone at the Central States Rotary Youth Exchange and invited him to attend one of our breakfasts, and it looks like he just might this month, most likely the end of the month. He and his wife are also interested in the Exchange Hosting program!!

(BACF) Barrington Area Community Foundation Grant Application
Words of encouragement for Trudy, Jennifer, Craig, Narayan, Maria C, and all others involved in the Grant writing.  Thank You for your efforts and so much time spent!

Next week’s (January 23) Guest Speaker will be Kay McKeen from SCARCE (School & Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education).  SCARCE is an award-winning environmental education non-profit dedicated to creating sustainable communities.

Club Announcements:

Trudy Wehren is working on the BACF grant application for $25,000 for Stop the Bleed kits. The kits are much more extensive than what they first thought. They include emergency supplies in case the kids have to shelter in place (which is very likely). They’re going out to all the schools – parochial, private schools included.

RETURN TO SOUL band is at ZaZa’s tonight at 7 PM. They played at our fundraiser and are great!

YTD $700 has been collected for the year end appeal.

Mary Holcomb indicated the food drive for Harper College in January – Feb is scheduled for random acts of kindness. Soups, non-perishable foods are being collected; might also need socks, etc. Bring it to Rotary – Mary will get it to Harper.

Fund Raiser Fiesta Friday in February, February 21, 2020 at the Concorde Banquets at 20922 N. Rand Road in Kildeer. Karen Bloom, professional salsa dancer, will be on hand to help everyone shake it up. Tickets are $100 each, Raffle tickets are $20 each or 6 for $100 (Two prizes of $1000 and $500). Open bar.

Maria Peterson indicated the tasks for EVERY MEMBER:
  1. Bring at least one Silent or Live auction item (usually donated by a business).
  2. Supply at least one restaurant gift certificate valued at $25 or more
  3. Bring in at least one premium adult beverage (wine, 6-pack of beer, spirits).
  4. Report to your TEAM LEADER weekly.
Terry Cullum gave a pep talk about how to ask for donations. All the documents that are in the packets (given to each member) are also on the website. She suggested that people try to get “experiential” auction items; symphony, zip-line, cooking class, yard cleaning (by Interact club?). You might have unopened gifts of crystal that you can regift for this.

Joe Connelly– the Spartans, Hawkeyes and Fightin’ Irish won!
Brett Schulz– handed out bottles of champagne and wine to his staff to encourage them to find something to celebrate over the year.
