I sent out a link to update your information for the Rotary Directory.  Please check that if you haven't.  I also sent out a Directory and have received several corrections, so a new one will go out next week.  I also send out a separate email with everyone's Rotary ID numbers, which is needed if you want to sign up for "Auto Pay" for any Rotary Foundation donations.  Please let me know if you have questions.

Suzanne Gibson is working with Rotarians from Taiwan on a "New Generations" project to place two Taiwanese young men into summer internships in the US.  The purpose of these internships is to promote peace and understanding across cultures.  One (Oliver who is 21) has been placed with former Rotarian Morgan Delack's husband Nathan who owns the Emmy award winning Delack Media Group located in Barrington.  They are looking for housing for Oliver, preferably close to downtown Barrington, so that he could walk to work (otherwise he would need to be driven to and from work).  He will be here July and August.  He could do all the time at one home or do one or two-week stints at an individual house.  They are also looking for an internship for another young man in accounting.  If anyone would like information or could help, please email Suzanne Gibson.  This could be a great experience for a cultural exposure for a family, especially a family interested in the Mandarin language or Taiwanese/Chinese culture.  Both young men do speak English.

This week's  speaker is our own Trudy Wehren.  Her topic is "YOU Are the Most Difficult Person That You Will Ever Lead."  As you may recall, at the beginning of the Rotary year, several of our members who attended the Willow Creek Global Leadership Summit presented a short synopsis of the talk that they found most moving.  Trudy has attended the GLS for over 20 years and there was a talk on leadership that she felt was the most influential talk that she heard in all of her years in attendance.  She wanted to share the message from that talk with us.

Please remember to return your program surveys to David Waring who will do Programs for our club beginning in July.  Also, think about what committees you may want to participate on in this next Rotary year.  Also, SHARE any great ideas or suggestions on any topic to  us (me or Mark Gibson or any committee chair).

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Kris Young
thanked all in attendance at Marie Bolchazy’s Going Away/ Come Back Soon party, especially the hosts Elizabeth McGrath, Terry Cullum and Lew Parks.

Kris
also reminded everyone to turn in the program ideas survey to Dave Warring and encouraged everyone to accept Mushtag Merchant’s invitation to attend an interfaith discussion followed by a Shiite Iftaar dinner (meal for breaking of the Ramadan fast) on Saturday, June 9.

Mark Gibson
asked Narayan Murarka to come forward and accept the International Service Certificate presented to him at the District Conference.

    Narayan

Narayan thanked everyone for their timely dues payments as we are coming to the end of our fiscal year.  As planned, the BBRC will be sending in the June monies accumulated from the $25 Foundation contributions; this is done a second time in December.  With Deb Villers help, Narayan assured everyone that their individual tax receipts would be forthcoming.  Narayan will also resend the instructions for Foundation Auto-Pay.  He also assured everyone that dues could be paid monthly, if desired, and, could be paid “bank to bank” if preferred.  Narayan has the Foundation banking details.

Joe Connolly
again alerted everyone to the planned June 4 – 14 Northwest Highway closure between Lake Cook Road and Route 59.

Mary Holcomb
mentioned the June 26 local food pantry food drive.  10-12 helpers are needed to gather up goods at Aldi’s and fill the back of Steve Hollis’ truck

CLUB MEMBER DAN NARANJO GAVE     HIS CLASSIFICATION ADDRESS
Dan Naranjo
Presented his Classification Talk.  Dan is currently a Cook County Public Defender, a job he is dedicated to and loves.  He provided some background about his large Cuban family who lived in Miami after leaving Cuba.

Dan went to under grad school at University of Illinois where he met his wife Otilia; and, subsequently, he attended law school in Florida studying criminal justice and defense.  He returned to Illinois with Otilia to raise a family of four.  He currently works with a legal group that has offices in Rolling Meadows and Markham.  His case load can include custody, misdemeanor/felony, appeals and juvenile cases.

The remainder of Dan’s presentation was meant to help the audience gain a better understanding of the position of a Public Defender, and how this work could be so engaging and rewarding.  Dan focuses on seeing that justice is done in the interest of his individual clients AND in the interest of all citizens that should anticipate a fair judicial system.  He feels he is protecting the fundamental rights of everyone.

Key take aways from Dan’s perspective:

- it is vital that the public defender gain the client’s          trust, whether the client be guilty or innocent
- it is often the case this may be the first time anyone      cared enough to see the client treated fairly
- the jury system DOES work
- bail reform has both positive and negative aspects
- as the lawyer, you definitely gain an appreciation for      what you have to go home to.

FUN & FROLIC

          Mike Martinez and Suzanne Gibson

conducted the first rehearsal performance of the BBRC Kazoo Band in preparation for the “big show” in the 4th of July parade.  Boy do we all need practice!

Mark Gibson
queried the crowd on how much they recalled from the most recent issue of The Rotarian.  Let’s just say very few did their homework.

RAFFLE
Marie Bolchazy
was asked to pick the $10 raffle winner who was Roy Mason.  Debbie Villers did NOT pick the white marble for the $196 kitty.

FINAL NOTES
Mark Gibson and Kris Young reminded everyone:

- June 5 is the next Board Meeting
- June 19 will be dinner and the installation of the new    Board membership at the Garlands.  Members and        guests are welcome.
