Hello Rotarians,

Next Friday evening is our 7th ANNUAL RENDEZVOUS with a theme of "MARDI GRAS REDUX" and last minute preparations are underway by the committee.  Once again, check out the silent and live auction items and send the link to all of your friends, family and co-workers because they can also bid on our fantastic items.

New items keep being submitted daily, so check the site often.  Remember, you can still purchase event tickets and raffle tickets and if you prefer to pay be check, make it out to our nonprofit foundation "BREAKFAST ROTARY CHARITABLE FOUNDATION" for any purchases. This should be lots of fun as we will have a great live band for music and entertaining games and raffles.

Rotarians completed the Highway Cleanup on Route 14 and the weather cooperated.  Thanks to Ron Hamelberg who coordinated this activity along Highway Rt. 14, which is a stretch of road that was "adopted" by our Rotary Club. Members worked for over 3 hours along with Barrington Noon Club members to keep our community beautiful!  Thanks to all whio participated

This week our speaker will be Pamela Jensen from the nonprofit organization International Justice Mission.  Several of us  have heard the founder of IJM, Gary Haugen,  speak at the Global Leadership Summit and I thought it would be informative to bring someone to speak to our club.  Louis and I met with Pamela who works for the Midwest branch of IJM and were impressed with their important mission.

- Joe Connelly was recognized as being “pinned.” He got to choose from an exciting batch of Rotary trinkets presented by Kris Young.

- Kris went on to congratulate Suzanne Gibson as she was inducted into the BACOA Senior Hall of Fame.

- Additionally, Kris shared that the BBRC Sister Agreement with Guatemala Sur was renewed.

- Kris was also collecting for those that attended the Ciao Baby dinner the prior Friday.

- A clip board containing the many thank you notes that the BBRC has received was passed.  Thank yous came from the Boys and Girls Club, the new Northwest Supper Club that was presented with our Rotary gavel, the Cuba Township Food Pantry and in recognition of the BBRC being a charter member in sponsoring the Iron Lung display.-- Susie Whipple reminded everyone that the Scorched Earth Brewery in Algonquin was sponsoring a festival Friday and Saturday, April 20 and 21.

- Ron Hamelberg wanted confirmation of those planning to participate in the Route 14 clean up near Makray Golf Course on Saturday, April 21, starting at 8AM.

Joint effort by Barrington Noon Club, BBRC and friends.

- Mark Gibson offered that BACT rescheduled their Earth Day event for Monday, April 23, at 3PM, at the Peterson Preserve across from BHS.

Steve  Hollis

Another list was circulated to have people sign up for Kid Fest on May 5.  Interact students will be coming to help us assemble snack kits and make event announcements.  Weather permitting, the BBRC members should come out Friday night, May 4, at 5PMto assemble the kites in the Citizens’ Park Pavilion.

Guest speaker - Trudy Wehren

Trudy Wehren chose to give an “unclassification” talk!  In a fascinating description of her upbringing and pioneering spirit she epitomizes the “work hard for everything in life you want” mantra.  Always on the move and looking for new challenges, she drove through school; joined Eastman Kodak in a never ending series of fascinating, once in a lifetime opportunities including a role in the 1964-65 World’ Fair.  She was often handling confidential financial and proprietary information, moving from Rochester, New York to Colorado, and on to San Diego and then LA and Palm Springs.  And, from administrative to payroll to sales and customer service. She chose early retirement returning to the Chicago area and work at Willow Creek Church as a point person for non-cash donation liquidations.  And then off to lead USA-wide tours, 100 days on the road for 8 years…and loving it!  All the while she was guided by the view that her actions were either driven to address a problem OR driven to make a vision reality.  Per Trudy, “…life is great!”

Brag Bucks / Happy Dollars:

- Lee McCloud had to brag about one of his prior swimmers, Alexa Hamilton, who just became a new mom in Denver.  And, he wanted to congratulate Joyce Palmquist on her retirement.

- Suzanne Gibson shared the success of the April 14 Empowerment meeting sponsored by three Districts with guest speakers: Dorrit Bern, Juliet Riseley and Talei Thompson.  Three $1K scholarships were awarded to deserving students.

- Steve Hollis was delighted to announce his son had safely arrived in the Czech Republic.

- Dave Waring announced that the BACT Grant Breakfast was taking place just next door in the Garlands where $230K in grant monies were going to be awarded.

- Brett Schulz was continuing the celebration of the end, finally, of tax season.

- Maria Peterson donated $3.40 in honor of her 34 year old CPA husband also surviving tax-mageddon.

                  THE BIG EVENT

               Mardi Gras 2018 - Redux

Lew Parks provided the following Rendezvous/ Mardi Gras update:

- 196: 200 event tickets have been sold (38 coming from sponsors)

- 210: 500 raffle tickets have been purchased

BBRC’ers were asked to stay after this morning’s meeting to receive a tutorial on setting up accounts for others on their iPhones the evening of the event.  It is anticipated table “captains” will be identified to help specific tables/patrons should they have trouble bidding.

Lew also asked if anyone could identify a Sharon Sinclair or a Holme party who purchased a Table of 10.

Fun & Frolic

Joe Dorociak took a different spin on the Fun and Frolic…..mostly frolic!!  Making fun of Ol’ Man Biden was the order of the day.  Then the group was challenged to associate colors with genre of music. We failed miserably.

RAFFLE

Trudy Wehren drew Stephen Li’s name for the $10 raffle prize.  Stephen drew Debbie Villers name, but Debby came up short…..no white marble nor almost $100!

NEXT MEETING
