GREETINGS FELLOW ROTARIANS:

This past week proved impactful for our community through service projects with Giving Day and our Interact students with Merry Meals. Thank you to all who participated and helped make a difference in our world.

This week we will be hearing from Brian Harris, Superintendent of
District 220 since 2014, with our own Craig Winkelman joining him for questions.  Invite friends and business associates to our meeting to learn about the pending referendum and the status of our school district.

Further service opportunities exist with the Boys and Girls Club at Sunny Hill. Please let me know of your interest, and I will connect you with their director. Tutoring during the day is also welcomed by and at Sunny Hill.

Additional opportunities are emerging with our interaction and support of SET.

Please contact Jim Otis regarding the I Wish program.  The shopping day will be taking place on December 20th at 10 a.m. Thank you to all who have contributed financially as well.

Lastly, Ron Arden will be our speaker/
musician on December 20th to conclude this year with singing and songs.  Do let me know if you have a favorite.   And Trudy has offered us a Fun and Frolic  that day in a trivia game format.  Come join in the fun.

Respectfully Yours in Rotary,

Mark S. Gibson. President BBRC

December 20          I Wish BBRC shopping

Mark added that the Sunny Hill Boys and Girls Club is looking for volunteers to work with kids on reading every day from 3-7PM when the Club meets.  Volunteers could assist once a week or every two weeks.

Initiatives that are currently under consideration by the BBRC Board include support for one Summer Employment Transition (SET) student, as well provisional support for an Elgin Symphony (ESO) concert in Citizen Park in 2019 in collaboration with the Barrington Cultural Committee and the Park District.  The BBRC’s support  for the ESO event would include volunteers needed and not funding.

Jennifer Lucas also provided information about a program from the Shedd Aquarium supporting the elimination of plastic straws.

Finally, Mark indicated Francisco Viau would become an Honorary BBRC member at our January 10 meeting with the membership’s approval.

Jim Otis – Again passed around an envelope for donations that go toward purchasing Christmas gifts for the I Wish families.  $500 has been donated to date. Additionally, there is a sign up list to help purchase the gifts on the shopping day, December 20, at 10AM.

Terry Cullum – Shared a heads up about a Team Trivia event that Trudy Wehren is working on for Saturday, March 9, 4-6PM.  The event would take place at Hollis Brothers.  The Club will get a sample of the activity at our December 20 meeting.

Steve Hollis – Passed around sign up sheets for both December 7 and 8 related to Giving Day.  Help is needed with set up at the Middle School on Friday the 7th, as well as support for the distribution of goods on Saturday the 8th.  Sign up with Steve on the Rotary list or at the general sign up on line.

Steve also shared that he has Save the Date cards for next year’s Rendezvous; he is actively soliciting auction items at >$300 in value; the Barrington Bank has donated $3K as our initial sponsor, we need more sponsors ideally at the $5K level.

Mike Martinez – Has assumed responsibility for Membership and is initially focusing on member attendance, where individuals will be recognized for perfect attendance.  He would like to see the current 50% attendance rate at each meeting increase to 60%.  He will be reviewing the recruiting, orientation and engagement activities relating to membership as well.

Dan Naranjo – Reminded everyone that the Interact high school group was organizing a Merry Meals packing project for Saturday, December 8, at the high school cafeteria from 10-3PM.   The goal is to create 20,000 food packets. The kids have already raised $3500 toward this project with $930 from the BBRC.  Donations can be included in the envelope being passed around.

Dave Waring – Asked that people RSVP re: the Christmas party on December 8, reminding everyone to bring an appetizer to pass and beverages of their choice.  He will have some soft drinks, beer and wine.

Nancy Shepherdson – Passed out flyers inviting everyone to participate in the Lake Zurich Club Ugly Christmas Sweater Pub Crawl on December 15 from 1-5PM.  A $25 donation includes two drinks.

Speaker/ Presentation: Pastor Zina Jacque

Jeanne Hanson introduced our guest speaker, Zina Jacque, a close friend and multi-credentialed pastor of the Barrington Community Church.  https://ccbarrington.org/reverend-dr-zina-jacque/

Digressing from her prepared presentation, “Values Worth Passing On Creating Ethical Will,” Pastor Jacque challenged the audience to think of the legacy they wish to leave behind, not in material possessions but in examples and values demonstrated through a lifetime.  Think of what will be left in the hearts and minds of those that are close to you.  It is paramount that people share the gifts that bring them and others joy.  “Walking the Talk” is so important.

Today more than ever leaders need to identify the values they want to pass on and constantly ask themselves if their actions match their words.

In closing, Pastor Jacque wanted everyone to ask of themselves:  What did I learn?  Who did I help?

Brag Bucks:
Maria Peterson offered an “unbrag” and asked the Club’s patience as she worked through her search for her next endeavor.

Mike Martinez, admitting he doesn’t always root for winners, wanted everyone to recognize his alma mater Loyola Academy’s second time winning in Class A.

Deb Villers shared the “small world” discovery that her dad and Pat Hogan’s dad were actually in the same graduating high school class from West Frankfort, a very small town in southern Illinois.

Joyce Palmquist wanted everyone to know the impact Pastor Jacque has had on a community far beyond her own congregation.

Fun and Frolic:
Mark challenged the group with some planetary and space questions – surprise!   We actually got about half of the answers correct.

Raffle:
Pastor Jacque drew Dan Naranjo’s name for the $10 raffle.  Dan drew Stephen Li’s name for the $89 white marble challenge, but no luck!

Next Meeting:
The next meeting will be on Thursday, December 13, at 7AM at the Garlands.
